As I noted yesterday, the “unexpected” nature of reading struggles is definitive in who is diagnosed with dyslexia. We should sit w/the tension of who we *expect* to struggle & how often that struggle is then pathologized & punished.

Sometimes… kids are just trying to make it through their day. Teachers need to understand this. And sometimes… teachers are just trying to make it through their day. Administrators need to understand this.

Outstanding educators come from all different backgrounds & there’s evidence that exposure to educators who share students’ diverse backgrounds & experiences can have powerful effects.

My dream job, too!
I just want to dedicate 100% of my working hours to student advocacy and improving K-16 literacy. Why doesn’t this job exist yet 😭

I teach upper elementary and need to do some whole group lessons on multisyllabic words using the 6 vowel types. Any ideas or recommendations? We don’t have a curriculum for this. I’m looking at WV phonics but not sure what I think yet. #sor #scienceofreading

To reiterate what teachers have been saying for decades: 99.9% of the problems that students have to battle w/ and overcome would be resolved if teachers had smaller class sizes and, therefore, could develop a strong relationship with each student. It is really that simple.

Some students have a hard home life… and sometimes, that shows up as a bad attitude at school. Teachers can’t fix the home situation… but I’m grateful for the ones who are understanding and patient. There is always something going on behind that “bad attitude.”

This is why Heart Words, and other phonics based approaches, are preferred. #MCLC

We love the trend of teachers giving their students board games to take home during the holidays. What a great way to get students solving problems and talking to others while away from school! #thankateacher #MCLC
