Satoshi was asked this directly. In a January 2011 email to Mike Hearn he wrote: "I didn't find anything to recommend a curve type so I just... picked one." The NSA-backdoor reason is a theory people added later, and the nice side effect is that secp256k1 has no seed at all (its equation is just y² = x³ + 7), so this mystery never touched Bitcoin's curve.
