The real horror of Halloween.
Artificial cobweb: a bit of fake fun for you, but a very real and terrifying death for them.
If you see your neighbours using it, it's possible they don't know the danger so please print out this simple leaflet and pop it through their door:
tinyurl.com/HalloweenHedgehoβ¦
The fine, strong synthetic fibres of this lethal 'web' are difficult for animals to see at dusk and can quickly wrap around their legs, wings, and neck, trapping and killing birds, insects and mammals.
When Eden the hedgehog struggled to free herself the web tightened, cutting off circulation and causing deep wounds.
Can you imagine the pain and sheer terror?
And then seeing dawn approach, while hanging there, tightly bound and helpless, only an inch above the ground but suffering slow strangulation.
Aside from being stressed, dehydrated, starving and exhausted, she also had horrific bite/peck wounds to her face, where she had been held there, helpless, unable to curl and defend herself, while a predator tried to eat her alive.
Tragically her constriction injuries were too severe to survive, and poor Eden had to be put to sleep.
If you have used this deadly cruel trap to 'decorate' your garden, I beg you - take it down now.
Please spread this vital information, and help save lives.

To all the Supermarkets and big commercial stores that operate 'Self Check-outs'....... You are heading towards almost exclusively self-checkout now. Yesterday I went shopping at one such store and the lady checking receipts at the exit was stopping everyone.
I didn't choose to participate in that nonsense, I had already filled my trolly, emptied my trolly and scanned the items, refilled my trolly and so I just skipped the exit line and left.
I heard her saying "Umm - Excuse me β as I kept walking and raised the receipt above my head, leaving the store.
You can either trust me to do self-checkout, or you can put your cashiers back in place like it used to be.
β’ I'm not interested in proving that I did your job for you.
β’ If you want me to be a cashier with no training then that's your problem not mine.
β’ Keep employing young people and give them job opportunities.
YOU DON'T PAY ME TO SCAN MY OWN SHOPPING.
YOU DONβT GIVE ME STAFF DISCOUNT FOR WORKING FOR YOU.
Signed ......All of us
People we need to share this statement its basically about PROFIT to the stores AND putting People out of a JOB....!!!

Squirrels plant more new trees than every reforestation program on Earth combined.
Each fall, a single gray squirrel buries somewhere between 3,000 and 10,000 acorns, nuts, and seeds.
They do this by memory, sort of. They remember the general area but not the specific spots. The forgotten ones germinate.
Researchers studying scatter-hoarding species have found that squirrels recover only about 25% of what they bury. The other 75% becomes next year's saplings.
Oaks especially depend on this. Acorns are too heavy to travel by wind and too big for most birds. The tree's main reproductive strategy is convincing a rodent to forget where lunch is.
The forest you walk through is partly squirrel mistakes. The shade you sit under was something a squirrel meant to eat in 1982.
Worth thinking about next time one of them barks at you from a fence post.

There's a forest in Utah where every single tree is actually the same tree. 47,000 trunks growing out of one giant root system, all clones of the same parent. The whole thing weighs about 13 million pounds, around 40 blue whales worth. It's called Pando, and it's been alive for around 80,000 years. Humans hadn't even started painting in caves yet when this thing took root. It's the heaviest living thing on Earth.
Trees do some properly weird stuff. When a giraffe starts eating an acacia tree in Africa, the tree releases a warning smell into the air within minutes. Other acacia trees nearby pick up that smell and immediately start pumping bitter chemicals into their own leaves, before the giraffe even gets there. Giraffes have actually figured this out and learned to walk upwind, so they can get a few bites in before the trees notice them.
In 1997, a Canadian scientist named Suzanne Simard found that trees in a forest are connected to each other underground, through a giant web of tiny fungus threads that link them all together. Her experiments showed that one tree can send food and chemical messages to another tree through this fungus network. The press nicknamed it "the wood wide web." Some of the bigger claims about trees being one happy family are still being argued over by scientists, but the basic idea, that trees pass signals to each other underground, is now solid science.
And some live for thousands of years. There's a tree in California called Methuselah, a kind of pine, that is almost 4,860 years old. It was already 200 years old when the first Egyptian pyramid was built. There's another one growing nearby that scientists think is over 5,000 years old. Both were already ancient when Stonehenge went up.
Trees also do something to your body when you're around them. A Japanese researcher named Qing Li ran an experiment. He had people spend a few days walking in forests, then took their blood. The cells in their immune system that fight off viruses and tumors had jumped sharply, and the boost lasted for over a week after they got home. He had another group take the same kind of trip but to a city instead. They got nothing. The trees were releasing some kind of compound into the air that the city didn't have.
The tallest tree in the world is in California too, a coast redwood named Hyperion. 381 feet tall (taller than the Statue of Liberty), around 700 years old. A single trunk holds 550 million leaves. You're sharing the planet with all of this.

Migrating fish in Utrecht were getting stuck at a canal lock. Two ecologists fixed the problem with a doorbell.
It's called the Visdeurbe, or the "fish doorbell."
Every spring, fish migrate through the city's canals to spawn in shallow upstream waters. But the old Weerdsluis lock, built in the 1600s, stays mostly closed in early spring because boat traffic is low.
Fish pile up against the gate with nowhere to go. Predators find them, and many don't make it.
Two ecologists in Utrecht had an idea. Put an underwater camera on the lock, livestream it, and let anyone on Earth press a digital doorbell when they see fish waiting.
The lock keeper opens the gate when enough people have rung in.
In 2024, the doorbell was pressed 150,000 times by viewers from Germany, the US, the Netherlands, the UK, and dozens of other countries.
Over 20 million people tuned in to watch. Thousands of fish got through: perch, bream, pike, rudd, catfish, even eels.
You don't have to live in Utrecht to help. You can open your laptop right now and help a fish in the Netherlands get to where it's going.
The site is visdeurbel.nl. Ring it.

Every use of a leaf blower is a massacre.
The stream of air from a handheld leaf blower comes out between 180 and 200 miles per hour. That's enough to shred caterpillars, strip butterfly eggs off leaves, and fling overwintering bees, fireflies, ladybugs, and moths into the street.
A chickadee needs 6,000 to 9,000 caterpillars to raise one brood. They overwinter in the leaf litter that falls ever autumn. The leaf litter your neighbor is blowing to the curb is next summer's songbird food.
And on top of it, leaf blower emissions are their own category of bad. Running a two-stroke gas leaf blower for 30 minutes produces roughly the same hydrocarbon pollution as driving a car 1,100 miles.
California and a growing list of cities have banned them outright. Germany's environment ministry told citizens not to use them unless "indispensable."
Is it time for a total ban?

Too on point not to share, βAussie reply to Trump rant about NATO not being there for us.
Mate. You run a country with 600,000 homeless people sleeping on the street tonight. A country where 40% of adults can't cover a $400 emergency without borrowing money. A country where insulin costs more than a car payment and people are rationing it to survive. A country where medical debt is the number 1 cause of bankruptcy. A country where women are dying in hospital car parks because doctors are too scared of abortion laws to treat a miscarriage.
You lock up more of your own citizens than any nation on earth. More than China. More than Russia. More than North Korea. The land of the free has 2 million people in cages, and a quarter of them haven't even been convicted of anything. They're just too poor to make bail.
Your life expectancy is going backwards. You're the only developed nation where that's happening. Your infant mortality rate is worse than Cuba's. Your kids do active shooter drills between maths and English while you sell the gunmaker's stock to your mates.
Your minimum wage hasn't moved in 15 years. You've got teachers working 2 jobs and veterans sleeping under bridges and you just spent a trillion dollars flattening a country that didn't attack you.
And youβve got a convicted felon, adjudicating raping, paedophile protecting, porn star shagging insurrectionist running the biggest dumpster fire war campaign since the Taliban thanked you very much for losing again.
And you're calling Greenland poorly run?
Greenland has universal healthcare. Free education. One of the lowest incarceration rates in the world. Nobody goes bankrupt there because they got sick. Nobody dies in a waiting room because their insurance said no.
"NATO wasn't there when we needed them." When exactly was that, champ? September 11? Because NATO invoked Article 5 for the first and only time in history FOR YOU. Soldiers from dozens of countries deployed, fought, bled, and died in Afghanistan FOR YOU. Australia wasn't even in NATO and we still showed up. For 20 years.
And you pulled out at 2am without telling anyone and left them to deal with the mess.
So maybe before you start calling other countries poorly run, have a look at your own backyard, you spray-tanned aluminium siding salesman. The only thing poorly run in this picture is your fucking mouth. Credit (borrowed from) Jim Scroggins - original author π· unknownβ

Ah, dandelions. πΌ
If only they were rare, fragile, and hard to cultivate.
Then we'd treasure them.
But because they are hardy and successful and forgiving and adaptable, we disparage them.
Consider them unworthy of our respect.
Even though they are the perfect plant - providing green all year round and cheerful flowers in the spring, are edible and highly nutritious, containing vitamins A, C, and K, along with minerals like calcium and iron, and are our precious pollinator's lifeline.
Please find a little love for these hard working flowers and leave them undisturbed, this month at least.
