With Carers Week drawing to a close, and the words from Liz Kendall’s vile and condescending video still echoing in my head, I’ve been reflecting this weekend on my experience as an unpaid carer for my partner. 1/15

Hi @Helen_Whately, are you saying that the PIP budget is too small, because people with the highest severity of disability aren't getting more money than the next highest severity?
Or are you saying that Tories were wrong to scrap Middle Rate Care of DLA, when creating PIP?

Disability benefits are discussed endlessly. The daily realities of disability are not. It's time to focus on lived experience, not political soundbites. #ChallengeTheNarrative

This is horrific, but we also need to talk about how we got here.
Disabled people don’t suddenly become “the scourge of the earth” in the public imagination for no reason. For months, we’ve seen relentless clickbait headlines and inflammatory coverage about disability benefits, “scroungers”, “worklessness”, soaring claims, the “benefits bill”, often stripped of context and designed to provoke outrage.
And Ben, I have to say, some of your own headlines and coverage have contributed to that climate.
You cannot repeatedly frame disabled and chronically ill people as a problem to be solved, a burden on taxpayers or people who need to be pushed and prodded, and then be surprised when that rhetoric spills out into the real world.
Sandra being spat at and called “the scourge of the earth” should be a wake-up call.
Words matter. Headlines matter. And disabled people are living with the consequences.

“It’s a hate crime!”
Caller Sandra tells @BenKentish how she was spat at and told she was ‘the scourge of the earth’ because she receives disability benefits.

Jeremy Vine treats carers the way the DWP treats carers; grateful for the free labour, annoyed when we speak up.
Martin Bonner retweeted
Many Carers handle care on their own. Help is limited, unreliable, or not available. That reality shapes every decision.

Sometime family carers DON'T WITHDRAW because they want to be alone. Caring takes SO MUCH ENERGY that eventually, CONNECTION becomes one more thing they don't have the CAPACITY for.
Martin Bonner retweeted
There is a difficult truth in family caring. Preserving one person's independence can sometimes depend almost entirely on another person giving up theirs.
If #JeremyVine continues framing this chiefly as something done to him, while refusing to engage with what #disabled people and carers say his programme has done to them, #disability charities may face an uncomfortable question: is he still an appropriate representative?
Replying to @theJeremyVine @KateClanchy1
Oh Jeremy, stop it. You've not been 'cancelled', no-one's calling for it and there's been no 'pile on'. Disabled people were asking you to listen to their lived experience and how the way that questions surrounding benefits were framed on your show and how it can contribute

When MSM lefties, sided with their work interests, & tried to bully disabled people, & anyone speaking out, the solidarity shown by our side was amazing. Despite their profiles & platforms we stood in solidarity with each-other & wouldn’t be gaslighted. It was amazing to witness

Thanks to @elonmusk, millions of people think free speech somehow makes racism acceptable.
I’ve been sent an enormous amount of vile racist abuse and threats.
Here's just a fraction. When will platforms take responsibility?
I’ll expose them, hopefully the police will find them.
More than ever we must stand united against racism, hate & division ✊🏾

He’s actually spot on. You seem incapable of listening & learning.
You’ve done exactly as Duke said - you’re hiding your bigotry behind a disabled family member as a way to go “see, I don’t hate disabled people” before bringing up benefit cuts up again IN THE SAME CONVERSATION🤦🏼♀️

Jeremy Vine bringing up my deceased uncle who died a horrific death from MND to let me know he’s sad to see me expressing how disabled people are feeling.
This man has no level he won’t stoop to
It’s not a pile on. Disabled people &carers are done with you targeting us constantly

Jeremy Vine has now deleted the post where he brings up the fact my uncle died of MND.
Guess he didn’t realise the internet is forever 🤦🏼♀️
Deleted it. No apology. Just “how do I stop more people seeing it” 🙄
He’s so spineless it’s unreal.

30mins in you advocate welfare cuts, absolving your bil from working but clearly saying ppl with anxiety must, while amputees can work in call centres. It's simplistic at best, harmful at worse
I worked while very disabled but was always aware of the difficulties. Why aren't you?

Anyone who tried to engage with the substance of the debate gets blocked.
Anyone who tries to engage on a personal level gets blocked.
If you host programmes that defame decent people, dont cry bully when decent people point out your flaws.

To get above the 14.9k I've been stuck on for an unholy 5yrs, coincidentally since upsetting Braverman in govnt👀
Could you wonderful people get me above 15k by then, please??🙏✊️✌️💞

This is exactly how solidarity gets fractured. “Where were you when MY group was attacked?” isn’t an answer to concerns about another group being attacked Racism & ableism both deserve challenge Turning marginalised people’s experiences into a competition helps absolutely nobody
