✈️ Fungal infections are often tied to specific places. The people who catch them don't stay there. If you've traveled recently and think you might have a fungal infection, tell your healthcare provider where you've been. That detail can be the difference between a fungal infection getting caught and getting missed. Think fungus — and mention the travel.

Fungal diseases are an important but often overlooked public health concern. They can affect people of all ages and range from common superficial infections of the skin and nails to severe, life-threatening infections, particularly among individuals with weakened immune systems.

🍄 An infection that won't clear isn't always bacterial. Fungal diseases are increasing worldwide, but they're still frequently misdiagnosed or undiagnosed — largely because early symptoms look so much like bacterial infection. That mix-up matters: it often means patients get antibiotics instead of the antifungals they actually need, and misusing either drug class can fuel resistance. With only three classes of antifungals available and no vaccines for fungal disease, catching it early matters more than usual. This Fungal Disease Awareness Week: if an infection isn't responding to treatment, ask your provider whether it could be fungal.

A verdict in court is only fair when all the evidence has been considered, and medicine should be held to the same standard. Whenever a person who has recovered from tuberculosis still coughs, the case is usually considered to be over before it actually should be.

#WorldSkinHealthDay @MMSNIG we believe better knowledge, about #TricohytonIndotineae is necessary, especially in 🌍 where studies are few and reporting is low. Avoid FDC steroid creams, seek help early for drug resistant cases

Trichophyton rubrum complex microculture. This one took longer to produce the classic morphology and had lesser microconidia than other isolated strains we've seen – at Chacao, Venezuela

Mucormycosis is a rapidly progressive, invasive fungal infection that causes severe disease. The latest epidemiologic data, risk factors, diagnostic strategies, and treatment approaches are discussed in a new review. 👉 nej.md/3ZsLZ21 Early diagnosis and initiation of antifungal therapy significantly reduce mortality among patients with mucormycosis and hematologic cancers, from approximately 80% to 40%. Accurate diagnosis of mucormycosis begins at the bedside with evaluation of symptoms and signs in patients at high risk (seen in figure). Although early symptoms and physical findings in patients with mucormycosis are often nonspecific, they carry important diagnostic significance in patient populations with high risk. Periorbital cellulitis, diplopia, focal palatal necrosis, and necrotic wounds in patients at high risk should cause serious concern for mucormycosis and lead to prompt assessment. Maintaining a high index of suspicion for mucormycosis in such patients can be the impetus for obtaining fluids and tissues for diagnostic analysis, ordering imaging procedures, initiating antifungal therapy, requesting surgical assessment, reversing immunodeficiencies, and correcting metabolic abnormalities. Learn more in the Review Article “Mucormycosis” by Dimitrios P. Kontoyiannis, MD, ScD, and Thomas J. Walsh, MD, from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (@MDAndersonNews), Center for Innovative Therapeutics and Diagnostics, and University of Maryland School of Medicine (@UMmedschool): nej.md/3ZsLZ21
