For 25 years, the Toll-like Receptor pathway was considered a series of distinct protein complexes that drive inflammation. Today, we report that the entire pathway, from receptor to transcription factor, is executed from within one complex—the myddosome.

Dr. Esther Lederberg was a pioneer in bacterial genetics. For much of her career, she did not receive the professional recognition bestowed upon men whose work was intermixed with her own. Recognizing her contributions brings her legacy out of the shadows. asm.social/1ux

An inspiring celebration today of an endowed chair for @PaulSaxMD. He’s truly a giant in the field and I’m lucky to have called him a teacher, mentor and friend. Congratulations Paul!
NLRP11, a top hit in forward genetic screen for human genes required for Shigella-induced cell death. Led us to investigate NLRP11 function in gram-negative infection. @SciImmunology @mgh_id @MGH_RI @MGHMedicine

NLRP11 is a pattern recognition receptor for LPS. It is required for efficient activation of the caspase-4 inflammasome by LPS. NLRP11 binds LPS and forms a HWM complex with caspase-4. @SciImmunology @mgh_id @MGH_RI @MGHMedicine

NLRP11 is primate-specific; could contribute to 10^4 fold human-mouse differences in severe infections like sepsis. @SciImmunol @mgh_id @MGH_RI @MGHMedicine

Some further thoughts about Dr. Marty Samuels, of @BWHNeurology, who was quite simply the best clinical teacher I’ve ever encountered.
Here's why he was so great, with a few choice videos to prove it.
