This is the travel hierarchy in Scotland’s National Transport Strategy: bit.ly/2yqzfjg. Walking/wheeling is at the top: not cycling, not buses, not taxis, not cars. Yet time and again, this isn’t followed through in practice. Time for change!

Road Policing officers are appealing for information following a crash in Dalkeith.
Around 4.30pm on Friday, 16 October, 2026, a black Range Rover struck a pedestrian on Old Dalkeith Road, Danderhall.

Martin Lewis has asked the public for simple, inexpensive and broadly uncontroversial changes that could make Britain work a little better.
What better place to start than with putting an end to street scars?
We can hold utility companies to account for scarring our streets with just a few changes to legislation that will:
🚧Make them put pavements back exactly as they found them and increase the fines for failing to do so.
🚧Require them to pay the full cost of restoring damaged pavements to the original standard.

Please submit your small ideas for fixing Britain to the Small-Ideas.org website. It’s a new charitable initiative I’ve set up to try and make sure life’s potholes don’t get ignored. Working with two charities and a cross party panel to turn your ideas into policy then try and make it happen. Please share.
Still no news on when the George IV Bridge hotel works will end. We're also told that it's not possible to improve the pedestrian 'tunnel' to Lawnmarket. Councillors and council officers are all frustrated too but the Council unfortunately seems to have very limited influence.

We've seen an increase in bicycles being used on pavements and being ridden in an erratic or unsafe manner.
Please remember:
📣 Wear appropriate kit
📣 Be aware of your surroundings
📣 Follow the rules of the road
📣 Ride at a safe speed
📣 Stay focused
📣 Respect pedestrians
Brilliant to see such cross-party agreement at Council today on the importance of pavement maintenance: the most basic thing to help people walk (or wheel)...
Watch the Broomhouse Easy Walkers telling councillors about the effect of poor pavements on their lives and wellbeing (from 56 minutes): edinburgh.public-i.tv/core/p….
Also, our deputation (from 23 minutes) calling (unsuccessfully 😢) for more investment in pavement maintenance.
We're supporting residents of the Western Villages in their efforts to eliminate widespread illegal and antisocial parking.
This surely isn't what a "Net Zero Carbon Development" is supposed to look like! 🙁
Utilities firms are wrecking our pavements*, with virtually no consequences.
* and roads: a major cause of potholes!
Powerful deputation from Craiglockhart Parent Council to tomorrow's Transport Committee on road safety, after years of delay and last year's protests on road safety and the need for pedestrian crossings
Do you remember when ‘A-boards’ clogged up Edinburgh’s pavements? We don’t want to see them return, as a petition to Thursday’s Transport and Environment Committee asks.
We still have plenty of (perhaps even more!) pavement clutter!
See our deputation and objection here: bit.ly/4xKdVy0.
By the way, it was often the biggest corporate businesses that had the biggest/worst pavement adverts, so the ban (largely well enforced by @Edinburgh_CC) probably helps smaller businesses.
Major report on Princes Street at Wednesday’s Planning Committee; democracy.edinburgh.gov.uk/i…
We broadly favour Option 1 which officials call “Ambitious Pragmatism” with wider southern pavements. We’re especially keen to see early action to improve the chaos at Waverley Steps.
Good to see so many people back on Princes Street yesterday using the temporary footway extension. Hope the drainage has been well thought through?!

Summer Streets pedestrianised Cowgate. Another piece of Council legislation ignored by the drivers especially Ubers. Police Constable on Cowgate said “what do you expect me to do, stop cars?” “Well aye I do!”

How can Edinburgh manage streets better for everyone?
'Dangerous and inadequate': Charity raises alarm over ignored Edinburgh road closures trib.al/CcibCzy
We've been in touch with the Council about multiple issues affecting pedestrians in the city centre as the streets get so busy. Disappointing to see no enforcement or stewarding of 'Summertime Streets' in the Cowgate!😐
Thanks @bt_uk. We will be interested to see what action you take?
All the phone boxes in these photos - and many more - have been in an appalling state for years.
South Bridge is currently a walking disaster!
Replying to @EdiDisgraces @edinhelp
5pm this evening and South Bridge is packed. Trip hazard and congestion enabler laying flat on pavement.

Useless security barrier on the High Street finally deployed yesterday. Pedestrians first is supposed to be the Council mantra. All this barrier causes is potentially dangerous pedestrians crushes on an otherwise empty road. These barriers were temporarily in 2017.

What happens when the fly-tipping van does visit? Well...
1. It parks right next to an office chair for several minutes then simply drives away.
2. Also ignores the, frankly impossible to miss, mattress and rotting bed base at two other hubs nearby.
Response, @Edinburgh_CC?
