Katie Hobbs’ latest billion-dollar “miracle” deserves a fact check. She didn’t spend or forgive $1 billion. A nonprofit used federal taxpayer dollars to buy bundles of old, distressed medical debt for pennies on the dollar, then canceled the inflated face value. The Hobbs administration committed up to $10 million in federal COVID-relief funds. So when Democrats say this used “no state funds,” what they mean is: taxpayers still paid, just through Washington. It does nothing to lower the cost of healthcare. It does nothing to prevent the next medical bill. Arizonans can’t even apply. Relief depends on whether the hospital or collector holding their debt chooses to participate. But don’t worry, the contract makes sure the relief letters carry Hobbs-approved branding so she gets the political credit. The relief for struggling Arizonans is real. The “Katie Hobbs erased $1 billion” story is campaign-season math.
