American science is shrinking.
A Post analysis found that, halfway through this fiscal year, the number of competitive grants awarded by the National Institutes of Health is down by more than half compared with the same period last year. wapo.st/3OgoHKV

The proposed FY2027 budget includes a $5.8B (āˆ’12.3%) cut to the NIH. United for Medical Research calculated this could cost ~50,000 jobs and $11.6B in economic activity, with 26 states losing >$100M each. A tragedy for science, patients, and the economy. #NIH

The science funding system is BROKEN. PhDs and professors are spending their days writing grant proposals rather than conducting research that could transform millions of lives. And the worst part? The system REWARDS predictable, safe, incremental science. It PUNISHES radical ideas and moonshots.

I am recruiting graduate students for the experimental side of my lab @mcgillu for admission in Fall 2026! Get in touch if you're interested in how brain circuits implement distributed computation, including dopamine-based distributed RL and probabilistic representations.

Grateful to @megtirrell and @CNN for covering this story. My NIH grant to study hearing loss was abruptly canceled, then restored by a court, but @NIH hopes to terminate the grant AGAIN(statnews.com/2025/07/06/hhs-…), creating massive uncertainty for my trainees. We're in a golden age where gene therapy and AI are making science fiction real. But this instability hobbles our progress, spooks the next generation of scientific talent, and risks outsourcing our scientific leadership. As Congress decides the NIH budget, stable funding is essential to keep the best minds and intellectual property here in the US. I hope they recognize the value we bring to the table and choose to support us. As a reminder: One of the most famous GOP leaders, Newt Gingrich, actually advocated for DOUBLING the NIH budget (see here: nytimes.com/2015/04/22/opini…). Instead, the NIH budget has failed to keep up with inflation, leading to ever diminishing capabilities... cnn.com/2025/07/29/health/ni…

This chart made by Peter Gleick shows the proposed cuts to science graphically. This is bad for America. Please ask Congress to save science. #FundingScienceSavesLives
This budget proposes to cut the NIH by nearly half, a 40% reduction. The NIH has been responsible for an extraordinary number of lifesaving cures and has been an economic power engine unitedformedicalresearch.org… Ask Congress to save science. #FundingScienceSavesLives

The most vocal ā€˜protector of minorities’, sitting on billions of private dollars, is the first to retreat because of the risk of tax on their endowment. Ridiculous and shameful!
As a former @HHMINEWS Gilliam fellow, I’m deeply disappointed to see HHMI cancel the Hanna Gray this year and pause all competitions. @leslievosshall, Erin O’Shea — this was a moment to lead with vision, not retreat.

Most people don’t understand how *new* most cancer treatments are. The treatment that cured my lymphoma was developed when I was a teenager. The treatments that will cure our children’s cancers are being put on hold right now.
Replying to @MollyJongFast
Tons of talented scientists are losing their funding because a bunch of very rich people want a tax cut. Countless cures and treatments will be postponed or perhaps they will never come to fruition.

After 7 years, thrilled to finally share our #MICrONS functional connectomics results! We recorded activity from ~75K neurons in visual cortex in a single mouse, then mapped its wiring using electron microscopy. To systematically characterize neuron function, we built the first foundation model of the mouse visual cortex—trained via deep learning on data pooled from multiple mice and visual cortical areas. Our foundation model generalized to new neurons, animals, and even unseen stimulus domains. It also accurately predicted entirely new modalities, such as anatomically defined cell types. Importantly, this robust generalization enabled us to create accurate functional digital twins of individual mouse brains. Using the digital twin of the MICrONS mouse—where we knew the exact neuronal wiring—we discovered that neurons don’t connect randomly, even when anatomically positioned to do so. Instead, given multiple potential partners (axons near dendrites), neurons preferentially choose partners with similar feature selectivity (ā€œwhatā€) rather than receptive field overlap (ā€œwhereā€). Foundation models offer a powerful approach to systematically decode the neural code of intelligence. Huge thanks to @IARPAnews for funding this groundbreaking effort through the @BRAINinitiative, and to our amazing team at @Stanford @StanfordMed @bcmhouston, @Allen, @Princeton, @uniGoettingen and others! #Neuroscience #MICrONS #NeuroAI #Connectomics #FoundationModels #AI nature.com/immersive/d42859-…

In 2006 my PhD students and I had an idea, we tested, tested and tested again. Today we enroll our first metastatic breast cancer patient in a new clinical trial, ALL of this work was paid for by the US taxpayers. NIH grants translate to treatments. @HawleyMO Ā and @SenEricSchmitt
