Give children OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning). It was one of the best things I introduced to the school I led. Staff, children and parents thanked me for it.

The @OPAL_CIC programme is a rare success story in a dismal post-2010 play landscape here in the UK. It has worked with (I think) >1,000 schools and transformed playtimes for 100,000s of kids. (Pic: Hernhill PS playground. Yes, really.)

Just as adults need to talk things through, children need to play it out.
Just as adults need space to think, children need space to play.
Just as adults need a break to clear their heads, children need a break to play.
Just as adults need to talk to connect, children connect through play.
When playtime is taken away from children because they haven’t behaved well enough, or done enough maths, or concentrated enough, then they don’t get the play that they need. The play that helps them to develop the skills that they need for their future. For behaviour, and maths, and concentration. The play that helps them to manage their emotions and keep themselves calm.
Play shouldn’t be a reward or a treat. Play is the daily work of childhood. Play brings joy, learning and builds the foundations for the future. Play is the lifeblood of childhood.
Let our children play.

Access to play in school has never been more important, and yet has never been so undervalued.
@OPAL_CIC is bringing much needed hope to playtimes.
