This week, a research group presents a method to predict whether proteins are sensitive to pH and to identify which amino acids in the protein are responsible for its pH sensitivity. @KWhiteLab @KobbyVan_Dyck @NotreDame scim.ag/48dCed6

Actually one reviewer commented: "I’m not following. So they opt out of an extension. Isn’t this just then the standard timeline as if nothing changed? How does this become “early tenure”?" and it was so amazing to see our point stated so clearly.
New paper I'm extremely proud of: "Extended time, elevated expectations: The unappreciated downsides of pausing the tenure clock". We argue that extensions should be treated as a safety net, not insurance policy (1/6) pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pn…

This is also why identifying candidates for awards, leadership roles, etc needs an open call and evaluation rubric vs an impromptu solicitation of names.

Four College of Science faculty members received CAREER awards from the @NSF this year! These awards provide support to early career faculty who exhibit the potential to “serve as academic role models” and “lead advances in the mission of their department or organization.”
Congratulations to the seven @NotreDame researchers who received prestigious Early Career Development (CAREER) awards from the @NSF this year! Since 2014, Notre Dame faculty have earned 68 of these nationally competitive awards. ➡️ Read more: research.nd.edu/news-and-eve…

I successfully defended my thesis today! I want to thank everyone in the lab for their support but especially Dr. White for all of her support over the years. She has pushed me to become a better scientist and I couldn’t imagine a better lab to complete a PhD in!!
Congrats Dr. Donahue! (@cetd0101). The first defending graduate student in the lab and she totally rocked it! I made her a celebratory "graphical abstract" cake to celebrate, which I also rocked. Though it looked very rough after an hour of waiting for the party to start!

A new study in the Journal of Cell Science by University of Notre Dame researchers examined individual cells, and showed that cancer cells have a higher pH than normal cells, but discovered that single-cell pH changes dynamically during the four phases of cell division.
