Congrats to Kobby (@KobbyVan_Dyck) and Leah (@leahmcossin) on their Ph.D. graduation and hooding last weekend! It was so great to celebrate with them.

This week, a research group presents a method to predict whether proteins are sensitive to pH and to identify which amino acids in the protein are responsible for its pH sensitivity. @KWhiteLab @KobbyVan_Dyck @NotreDame scim.ag/48dCed6

Super late post! Congrats to Leah Lund on defending her thesis on the crosstalk between mechanical forces and pHi in driving cancer behaviors. Leah defended July 30th and started her new job as a teaching faculty at Indiana Univ. South Bend on Aug. 1st. Her students are so lucky!
Leah's manuscript was recently accepted at Cell Death & Disease! Read it here: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Tenure docs submitted? Ice cream for everyone! HUGE thanks to current & former White Lab members! Any success I've had as a PI is a direct result of their hard work & dedication. And any joy I've experienced as a PI has come from seeing them succeed (or from their exciting data!)
Congrats to Dr. Van Dyck on defending his thesis yesterday! His work characterizing pH sensitive signaling proteins is a tour de force! Preprint: biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/…
Per White Lab tradition, Kobby cut a graphical abstract cake (decorated by me)! I think I'm improving...
And a video from the post-defense celebration! Congrats @KobbyVan_Dyck!
Had a great visit to Penn State to present our work on pH-dependent protein allostery. It was great to learn about the great work going on in the department. Getting to talk about science all day with smart people was a joy. Thanks @cdokafor for the invite!
Grateful for Notre Dame's investment in two of our lab's collaborative projects. One studies molecular mechanisms of biomolecular condensates and another studies how the mechanical environment of cancer cells alters signaling and drug responses! research.nd.edu/news-and-eve…
The 2025 Saint Mary's College STEM Professional Development Workshop is THIS WEEKEND! The Friday Night Keynote Address (6 pm Eastern) features @saintmarys alumnae Michelle Espinal and Stacy Lynett. RSVP here to attend in person or for the live-cast link: shorturl.at/pEGpA
This should be required reading! Really enjoyed Kaela's comments on leaving an all-women's undergraduate for grad school. Resonates with my experience! While resiliency is required for success in STEM (there's a LOT of rejection), leaders must do more to remove systemic barriers!

Today we cancelled lab meeting and carved pumpkins instead. IJ stumped us with some Halloween trivia followed by a hyper-competitive game of Uno (congrats to the victor @cariasma18)! We laughed so much that we got in trouble (shhh!!!!)
Congrats to rockstar @DattaScientist! Also congrats to her awesome trainees @NDTIMELab!
Equally honored to have received the CMBE Young Innovator Award and this stellar birthday card from my lab trainees at #BMES2024! 🤩💫✨🚀
Huge congrats to Châu Nguyen (@chloengyn267) who passed her candidacy exam today with flying colors! Châu is working to identify pH sensitive proteins involved in regulating cytokinesis and G1/S transition.

Come work with me @SJSU! We are hiring 2-3 positions this year! One position is in genetics or cell biology, and the other is a physiology position. Please share with your networks and reach out with any questions!

And the theme for #oSTEM2024 is...
Cultivating Pride & Resiliency: LGBTQ+ Leaders in STEM!

Alarming news from MIT (my Ph.D. alma mater). Black students made up 15% of the 2027 class, but just 5% of the 2028 class (post-SCOTUS ruling). Hispanic students went from 16% to 11%. Diversity strengthens the STEM education experience for ALL STUDENTS!

Actually one reviewer commented: "I’m not following. So they opt out of an extension. Isn’t this just then the standard timeline as if nothing changed? How does this become “early tenure”?" and it was so amazing to see our point stated so clearly.
New paper I'm extremely proud of: "Extended time, elevated expectations: The unappreciated downsides of pausing the tenure clock". We argue that extensions should be treated as a safety net, not insurance policy (1/6) pnas.org/doi/full/10.1073/pn…
