Some say that being a physician-scientist is like wearing two hats. I think it lets me #sockittokidneydisease in two different ways. One foot is in the clinic, helping patients get the best treatments. The other is in the lab, trying to make those treatments better.

I am honored and thrilled to take this next step, and hope to live up to the impressive leadership of my mentors Roger Brumback and Marc Patterson.
We are delighted to announce that Alison Christy, MD, PhD, will be stepping into the role of Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Child Neurology in January 2025. We look forward to a bright future for our journal! @OligoclonalBand

I truly do not think anybody loves the organ they specialize in more than nephrologists love the kidney

I also left mid-career during an exciting moment (I’d just moved the lab and was just ramping up in a stimulating new environment that was a stellar scientific fit). So swapping jobs/sectors at the time was a lot more pull than push. But while I was doing my job exactly as I wanted, I was still putting one foot in front of the other on what felt like a pre-determined trajectory. IMO, a totally valid reason to change course is to look anew at the world as it is today (frankly right now feels like the most exciting time in science in my lifetime), and actively re-evaluate whether you still want to be on the path you decided on 10+ years ago. I think it’s ok to keep opting into our lives. That way even if we keep doing what we’re doing, it’s on purpose.

DAPA-advKD trialing the initiation of SGLT2i in CKD4 and CKD5! The next frontier of #flozination. #kidneywk

At baseline, both groups had fairly high UACr, ~700 mg/g, an average eGFR 19. Slopes of both groups slowed after enrollment (?regression to mean), and slowed more for SGLT2! #kidneywk

And all the secondary outcomes are in favor of SGLT2i! Is this a huge enough trial to prove this is 100% effective? No, we’re still going to wait for renal lifecycles. But is it strong data that Sglt2s don’t accelerate progression and might help? Yes! #flozinate #kidneywk
