Clonal does not mean uniform. Our new review explores how genetically identical bacteria adopt different cell states, and how that diversity shapes survival, cooperation, antibiotic responses and gene transfer. annualreviews.org/content/jo…

The replacement of uracile by thymine probably first allowed viruses with T-DNA to resist DNAses active against U-DNA. This replacement allowed later the evolution of repair mechanisms to detect and correct the U produced in DNA by cytosine deamination.
Why does DNA use thymine, whereas the evolutionarily older RNA uses uracil, given thymine’s susceptibility to damage from UV light? A study suggests that although thymine breaks down more easily, its products are less harmful to the DNA molecule. In PNAS: ow.ly/fanQ50ZxF3E

Phage community: our plasmids for executing phage transposon mutagenesis are now on AddGene and I would love for you to try it out! It is powerful for ID'ing all essential genes and knocking out all non-essentials in a single experiment :) New exp here: addgene.org/browse/article/2…

Paper alert: sciencedirect.com/science/ar…? Proud that we brought together researchers, clinicians and patient/carers to convey our point that it is important to bring novel treatments for bacterial pathogens to patients also if they are not on the WHO Bacterial Priority Pathogen list.

Extremely clever new NGS tech from Roche 🧬 If it's hard to discriminate between nucleic acids accurately with a nanopore, why not synthesize a new polymer off a DNA template that is easier to sequence? It's an intuitively simple idea, but took *a ton* of creative nucleic acid chemistry + enzyme engineering to design modified NTPs and create polymers of them. It's been very interesting to see Roche move into the NGS market, and time will tell how this stacks up with the growing set of totally orthogonal approaches people are cooking up for sequencing tech. It feels like we are entering another renaissance for biological measurement infrastructure—which is super important. “Progress depends on the interplay of techniques, discoveries, and ideas, probably in that order." - Sydney Brenner (These animations of sequencing tech will never get old to me. What a time to be a biologist!)

New mechanism of gene transfer! With @CostaT_Lab @CBRB_Imperial, cf-PICIs form tail-less elements that, once released, spread among different bacterial species by hijacking tails from various phages. More exciting news soon! shorturl.at/kRJqE

Beautiful work on Tailocins 😮
Our paper is finally out at Nature Microbiology. A team effort discovering Tailocin cell factories. Listeria monocytogenes bacteria produce and store ~6000 tailocins per cell in a remarkable way. nature.com/articles/s41564-0…
