Quite struck by the lack of reference to "the Tories" or "Nigel Farage" in this conference speech by Andy Burnham

Burnham's speech has gone down very well among MPs in the Socialist Campaign Group. Its chair, Rebecca Long-Bailey, joked at a rally this evening: "What a day it's been. We're even considering disbanding the SCG. [We] got a lot of socialism in Andy's speech."

Just watched the speech in full. One of the best, and most powerfully delivered, by a British politician in a very long time. If he can deliver on his passion and promises, Burnham could be a transformative Prime Minister. But it’s a big ‘if’ …
I will build the Britain my dad wanted to see.

I'm often very critical of leaders' speeches at coconferences. But that was superb by Burnham - full of ideas & policy, inspirational & very emotional, honest & risky. Bold on social care, electoral reform & EU. Yet hard to see sums adding up. Memorable & maybe historic.

He doesn’t have all the means to bring it about, but so far this speech is the most comprehensive case for social and economic democracy we’ve heard from a Labour PM in the last 40 years. It’s significant because Burnham is the first Labour PM to entirely and avowedly say he wants to break with the Thatcher settlement.

Burnham promises a new politics. He does not want any party to govern with less than 30% of the vote. So he announces a new national commission on electoral reform. He secures another standing ovation

Enough is enough. For years, people have been expected to put up with Avanti’s cancellations, delays, overcrowding, and a service that has failed them time and time again. So my Labour government is bringing Avanti West Coast into public ownership at the earliest opportunity in March next year. That means passengers, not shareholders, will come first. More investment, fewer delays, and a renewed focus on getting the basics right. We're putting essential services back in public hands and building a railway that actually works for the people who use it.

BREAKING: Andy Burnham says he is going to "rip the plaster off" to fix broken social care system. New system will be universal, free at the point of use, and funded by everybody, he says, and Labour will fight next general election on delivering it. PM says annual cost is "not as high" as the £18bn a year that has been suggested - and that he will take his time to work out how it will be paid for. "The challenge in public finances is real so it has to be done carefully to avoid putting pressure on the public purse," he tells @bbclaurak

BREAKING: Andy Burnham tells @bbclaurak he will contest the next election on a new social care policy that is free at the point of use, signalling it will be paid for with tax rises on everyone Says he’ll set out the vision and timetable for the policy this week, and that the principle will be “everyone contributes” Asked about a dementia tax, he says nothing is off the table in terms of funding, but insists if the debate is reduced to complaints about tax rises the social care crisis will never be fixed Says it’ll cost less than the £18 billion a year some have estimated previously Says Labour’s manifesto pledges (presumably not to raise taxes on working people) mean it can’t be done this Parliament. But he’ll fight the next election on the policy
