Delighted to launch @JohnDoyleDCU’s new book ‘Before the Vote: Planning for a United Ireland’ at the Political Studies Association of Ireland conf at University College Cork. The book is not so much an argument for unity as the need to plan for its possibility/probability #PSAI26

Quite struck by the lack of reference to "the Tories" or "Nigel Farage" in this conference speech by Andy Burnham

SDLP and Sinn Féin both come and argue their case at Labour’s conference, albeit SF cancelled this year amid Drumcree. Find it slightly odd that NI’s unionist parties don’t come and put their case at the governing party’s main event.

Burnham's speech has gone down very well among MPs in the Socialist Campaign Group. Its chair, Rebecca Long-Bailey, joked at a rally this evening: "What a day it's been. We're even considering disbanding the SCG. [We] got a lot of socialism in Andy's speech."

Just watched the speech in full. One of the best, and most powerfully delivered, by a British politician in a very long time. If he can deliver on his passion and promises, Burnham could be a transformative Prime Minister. But it’s a big ‘if’ …

“People in Northern Ireland cannot vote for their own government”, laments Boyd Black, Labour Party NI secretary. Claims “no situation exists like this in the western world”. Fringe meeting at the Labour conference in Liverpool. #Lab26

I'm often very critical of leaders' speeches at coconferences. But that was superb by Burnham - full of ideas & policy, inspirational & very emotional, honest & risky. Bold on social care, electoral reform & EU. Yet hard to see sums adding up. Memorable & maybe historic.

He doesn’t have all the means to bring it about, but so far this speech is the most comprehensive case for social and economic democracy we’ve heard from a Labour PM in the last 40 years. It’s significant because Burnham is the first Labour PM to entirely and avowedly say he wants to break with the Thatcher settlement.

Burnham promises a new politics. He does not want any party to govern with less than 30% of the vote. So he announces a new national commission on electoral reform. He secures another standing ovation
