THE ART OF BEING AN EFFECTIVE COMPANY SECRETARY.
A great Company Secretary does more than take minutes. They help shape boardroom conversations, strengthen governance, guide decision-making, and ensure that good intentions translate into sound corporate practice.
But what does it truly take to become an effective Company Secretary? What separates someone who simply performs the role from someone who makes an indispensable contribution to the Board and the organisation?
This Wednesday on #JSConversations, we host Jane Okot P’Bitek Langoya, Chairperson of @UgandaIcsa , for a conversation on the art, practice and responsibility of being an effective Company Secretary.
We’ll explore the skills, professional judgement, relationships and habits that make the difference, and what it takes to excel in a role that sits at the heart of corporate governance.

Let's dialogue please, the solution to our challenges are eith all of us.
My concern is with my colleagues in the Ministry of Health, particularly
The problem is that they are not engaging in meaningful dialogue. They sit and wait for a hailstorm to hit them, then react by saying, “Oh, it’s raining! Are those stones? This is a hailstorm!”
First, they license universities. During the licensing process, the government not necessarily the Ministry of Health alone sets the number of students each university is allowed to admit.
But what benchmarks inform these decisions?
Let me give you an example, without mentioning the university. One university had been admitting 200 students, but its admission numbers were reduced to 60. What was the rationale behind that decision?
We are saying that these decisions should be based on clear criteria, including the number of lecture halls, the availability of lecturers, and the number of cadavers available for medical training.
Ideally, the ratio should be about four to six medical students per cadaver, with a maximum of eight students per cadaver.

A country can survive many arguments. It cannot afford to get medicine wrong.
Uganda is producing more doctors while hospitals continue to need them. Yet young doctors are still caught in battles over internship, pay, working conditions and what happens after training. That is not an internal quarrel within the profession. It concerns every Ugandan, because every family will eventually depend on a doctor.
On this week’s #JSCConversations, I sit down with Dr Frank Rubabinda Asiimwe, President of the Uganda Medical Association, Consultant Urologist and Transplant Surgeon.
We will confront the intern doctors’ crisis, doctors’ pay, brain drain, medical negligence, the duties doctors owe patients, the obligations the State owes doctors, and the larger question beneath all of it:
Can Uganda build a health system worthy of the people who depend on it?
THE DOCTOR, THE INTERN AND THE STATE.

TRAINED TO SAVE LIVES. LEFT WITHOUT JOBS. ARRESTED FOR DEMANDING THEIR DUE.
What is happening to Uganda’s doctors?
Why are we training doctors we cannot employ?
Why does internship facilitation remain a flashpoint?
Can Uganda stop the brain drain?
And should doctors themselves be held accountable?
Today on @JSConversations ,we sit down with Dr Frank Asiimwe, transplant surgeon and President of the Uganda Medical Association @TheUMAofficial

Moses Matovu gave Uganda music that did more than entertain us. He gave us songs that became part of our language, our humour, our memories and, sometimes, our own personal stories.
For me, #OliMujjawaMusajjaAsingaNze became one of those songs. It became part of the soundtrack of my campaign to represent the Uganda Law Society on the Judicial Service Commission.
There was something about that song that fitted the journey perfectly: confidence, humour, mischief, even a little swagger. And through it all, unmistakably, Moses Matovu.
And you cannot really speak about Moses Matovu without speaking about Afrigo Band. Afrigo became more than a band. It became an institution, a keeper of memories, one of those rare threads running through generations of Ugandan life. Parents danced to Afrigo. Their children danced to Afrigo. And somehow, through changing times, changing tastes and changing generations, the music endured.
That was part of Moses Matovu’s remarkable gift. He did not simply make music for his own generation. He helped create music that outlived moments, fashions and seasons. A song written years ago could suddenly find itself on a campaign trail, at a wedding, on a long drive, or in the middle of a conversation among friends, sounding as alive as ever.
That is what great musicians do. They write the song, and then they give it away to the rest of us. We carry it into our own lives and attach it to our own memories.
Today, Uganda has lost one of those men.
And today, the question belongs to him.
Oli mujawa, omusajja asinga oyo.
Rest well, Moses Matovu. Afrigo will play on. And so will the music.

Our senior colleague in the profession, @asiimwe4justice, was, as expected, magical on @JSConversations. Such depth of wisdom and perspective, all the while being fun and self-effacing, was deeply educational, as it was hilarious. I will, to quote you, leave all my sh*t on the mountains.

A pleasure to be there, High Commissioner. Your energy, industry and sheer determination to tell Uganda’s story and open doors for Ugandan business were impossible to miss. Diplomacy at its best is not ceremonial. It is energetic, practical and relentlessly focused on opportunity. You brought all three.
What a buzz at the 16th @UKAfricaSummit today! 🇬🇧🌍
Loved speaking about Uganda’s growth story — and meeting businesses excited by the opportunities in agribusiness, tourism, minerals, tech & more.
Huge potential for 🇬🇧🇺🇬 to grow together. Let’s make it happen! #GoFarGoTogether

Mark the date; you had more questions and this is a follow up @JSConversations on land transactions with the commissioner. This Wednesday 7PM EAT.
Last Wednesday, we talked land.
This Wednesday, we go deeper.
From the law of titles to the institution that actually issues, registers and protects them.
How does the Land Registry really work? How safe is your title? How does fraud get onto the register? What happens when records conflict? And what is being done to protect the most valuable asset many Ugandans will ever own?
This time, we ask the man at the centre of it all.
Baker Mugaino, Commissioner Land Registration.
The land conversation continues.
