In this episode, we take a byway from science, history, data, and personality to explore the host’s own experience. I am transparent about my beliefs because I write as participant-chronicler. But not everyone who writes on belief or parapsychology (the two differ) need be. In that vein, I'm inspired by @UVA's Ian Stevenson, M.D. (1918-2007), author of Twenty Cases Suggestive of Reincarnation (1966), et al. Asked by a reporter in 2002 the typical question about his eschatology, Stevenson replied: "My beliefs should make no difference to anyone." There's a time and place for testimony. But in our era of over-disclosure (and sometimes disclosure substituting for excellence), I find Stevenson's indifference refreshing. He's among the many parapsychologists profiled in my upcoming pod Extraordinary Evidence: ESP Is Real, launching Oct. 30. When we refer to "time" we are often referencing measurement of time versus the thing itself (whatever it may be); likewise we reference the unitary "arrow of time"--itself a measurement concept--to explain the near-impossibility of unbreaking an egg (i.e., Einstein's second law of thermodynamics). But time is more unruly and fantastical, as seen within quantum versus classical physics. A series of conferences, Quantum Retrocausation, convened by the University of San Diego and American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) have been exploring the question of time reversal and retrocausality. Papers from the latest (2017) are collected in the American Institute of Physics (AIP) Conference Proceedings volume 1841, issue 1.
