Afghanistan: @Isar2000 shows how checkpoint taxation sustained a neo-patrimonial political order, and its unraveling. The Taliban's leaner, more predictable checkpoint regime won over trade elites where the government's extractive chaos drove them away. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

Not sure about others, but to me "state building" is such a difficult concept to teach. Well, thanks to @YinQingfei's work, we can learn more about it in a much nuanced way, beyond nation states, in-btw socialist brotherhood, and within the context of anti-colonial politics

We have heard these days that judges cannot overrule the president, who himself claims to represent the will of the people. This view is the core of the #Illiberalism embedded in #populism, of the left or the right. I discuss this issue here. The book just arrived! @ILLSP_GWU

Two wars, two eras, two very different dress codes; same room, same old battlefield: against the Kremlin. Afghan Mujahideen in the 1980s rocked turbans, Zelensky in the 2020s sticks to his hoodie. Funny how modern journalists seem more interested in the wardrobe than the war!
