"Since the Arctic is quickly warming up, we’re probably past the point of hoping the Arctic Ocean can recover.” -@MarkSerreze, NSIDC director
Climate change is thinning Arctic sea ice in a couple big gulps instead of steady nibbling. That means weaker younger ice and less likely for recovery as ice thickness is half what it was pre-2007, study says. apnews.com/article/arctic-ic…

And of course, what material for the boots and hats? Shiny space blankets? Bright red canvas by Apocolypse Design?

In this paper they made tiny boots for dung beetles, to measure the impact of temperature on how often they stop rolling and stand on top of the ball: cell.com/current-biology/ful… I'm waiting for the obvious followup paper where they examine the impact of tiny hats to block the sun!

Ogives are bands of ice that alternate in both height and color and can be seen on a glacier’s surface. They are often shaped into arcs that point towards the bottom of the glacier. nsidc.org/learn/cryosphere-g… Photo credit: Allen Pope

Some good ideas there, but they assume many unsupported ideas, like the requirement for pressure gradients. The existence of underwater ecosystems implies life does not require 1 g gravity. Clouds mean the surface of Mars receives more solar photons on average than Earth. Odd!

After 2 days of safety and measurements training in Fairbanks, #SnowEx2023 #SnowExAlaska participants split in 2 group - one group stayed in boreal forest; second group drove 360 miles north to @Toolik to get ready for arctic tundra snow measurements @INE_Research @werc_uaf @NASA

NWS is at the Tanana Chiefs Conference Annual Convention this week in Fairbanks. We have met many people from communities across the Interior. This is a great event for us to hear about the current ice conditions and also share information about the upcoming spring breakup. #akwx

In this month's Alaska Trends magazine, there's a really good article about how Alaska's net migration losses are actually even worse than they appear because the state's working-age population is who's moving away: labor.alaska.gov/trends/mar2… #akleg

Wow! The neat thing about this concrete recipe is we can make *all* the parts from ordinary rocks: the silica is left over after HCl leaching, the red mud is precipitated from the HCl leach, and there's only a tiny amount (1%) NaOH.
