Rolling in to Vienna and reminded that, if you go strictly off of cuisine, the capital of what was once one of Europe’s great empires is basically the culinary equivalent of Indiana.*
*This is not a criticism of Austria or Indiana. Real ones know.
Rewatching “Goldfinger”—just realized that whatever the other implications in the Bond film universe, the leadership of the American organized crime is essentially wiped out.
Digging into the latest from @guywalters tonight. That it will provide some background to my own new project so much the better.
Sad to learn of the passing of my former colleague @IUILiberalArts @AnitaMorganhist —she was a wonderful historian and teacher.

For the second time as an historian I was entrusted with with telling a congregation’s history. Thank you Tabernacle Presbyterian for that honor and Indiana Historical Society and Ray Boomhower making it happen! #book9
Best thing you can do sometimes as a writer is write. Spent today writing an historical overview about religion, social gospel, Catholic social doctrine and American politics. And then I did some writing on my “Abyss” project follow up to Ike and the Holocaust. Progress!

In April 1945, with Axis defeat looming, Britain sent General Sir Andrew Thorne to Trent Park with a dramatic proposal:
Would captured German generals broadcast a surrender appeal to end the war and save lives?
Their response was astonishing:

You don't have to believe that AI will kill us all to see that it presents real and present dangers to human freedom even if it didn't progress one step further from current, publicly available commercial models.
AI is making us dumber, more dependent, and fraudulent.

MIT gets it.
“MIT wants to rebuild education around the things AI can't replace. That means oral exams, semester portfolios, in-person project work, and a required social component in every subject. The report even floats the idea of rethinking grades entirely, since without a GPA to optimize, much of the incentive to cheat with AI evaporates.”

Okay I’m not sure I can be on this tomorrow. That made me cry.
Tomorrow is a go pray and touch grass day.
We should have made it a federal holiday years ago to encourage civic — American — life.
Getting to see the “vengeance” weapons up close @I_W_M last week is already benefiting my research project (and hopefully an eventual book).

Getting to see the William Wilberforce memorial (after teaching about him for much of my time at Butler) a high point of visiting Westminster Abbey.
And shout out to lay Abbey docent Paul for making sure I saw Lord Mansfield and talking with me about Granville Sharp (which I had found on my own). The numerous memorials is nearly as overwhelming as the beauty of the Abbey itself.

The History Department at @Hillsdale is hiring **two** tenure track historians. If you're serious about the liberal arts and want to teach great students, apply! We're a dept of 19 that is probably the most collegial group of historians you'll find. higheredjobs.com/institution…
