I liked modern GW puffing Gus cigar as he looks over his field, and modern RELee surveying ( his scouting in the MexWar was pathfinding for Scott).

This may be one of the things that happens when the director is drunk.

You need to watch Cat Ballou even though it stars Jane Fonda. We always justify it on the grounds that it was made before she turned into a communist. And yes, this is the funniest scene in any movie.
He had a quirky mind, like a magpie, always looking for bright things.
If I understand correctly, what is particularly genius about TJ's clock is that you read it--decipher it--by moving the dial to where there's no shadow. Some days I doubt TJ. Then there are days where his genius swamps me. If I'm right, he played a very long game. @RBrookhiser

I think the wait for a verdict took the steam out of him, as it did us all. There were actual tee-shirts, "Free the Tarnower Press Corps!" with "Intent?" on the back. Ridiculous D.C. society aspect, with NPR running "All Things Considered" from the courthouse lobby. Good times.
Cute!

This is amusing.
The Alexander Hamilton seemed a bit off.
Davy Crockett kind of looks like Joseph Gordon-Levitt or some similar actor.
Thomas Edison looks a bit like John McCain.
Franklin looks a bit like Bob Dole.
Second mention— we are quick.

You know the joke? "What's the difference between communism and fascism? Nobody says, 'You know, they've never tried real Nazism.'"

Sam Potts would have been even tougher if he was missing both an arm and the nose.

From what I understand, the original cut was over 4 hours long and Peckinpah wanted Lee Marvin for the Coburn part but was turned down.

It came out in 1965 - the same year as Cat Ballou. There may be a rule against an actor losing both an arm and his nose in the same year.
This is the Wild West?

That was a great movie. Mean Apaches, captive white kids being rescued, Richard Harris and Ben Johnson as the perfect Southern officer and sergeant, Brock Peters and his USCT, one-armed James Coburn, Jim Hutton with his little mountain howitzer and Senta Berger!
Upvotes.

Me too, while up here on my beach/history tour I bought a book on Hood’s Tennessee campaign and one on frigate captains of the early 19th century.
News you can use.
He should have made a book about Harris— perfect subject for him.

I saw him daily for some weeks when he was in Westchester covering the Jean Harris trial. I learned from him that when the jury is not in the courtroom you can sit in the jury box and the judge won't chase you away -- and you can hear the sidebar conversation.

The entire plot of the Sam Peckinpah movie, “Major Dundee”. Although lore has it that Peckinpah spent most of his time offset drunk and Charleton Heston directed large chunks of the movie.
