When Sabastian Sawe ran the first legal sub-2hr marathon, his shoes made headlines.
But in Gothenburg, a team of scientists/nutritionists believe another factor was just as significant, if not more so.
A look inside sport's groundbreaking fuelling lab.

What it takes to fuel a sub2h marathon record?
115 CHO g/h!!! Wow!!
This is insane. Congratulations to all Maurten team (specially Tobias & Olof)!
Great job, this is real history made!

Sodium bicarbonate enhances cycling performance in hypoxia 🧂🚴♂️
This new study investigated the effects of 0.3 g/kg sodium bicarbonate on cycling time-trial performance in acute hypoxia 🔍
🚵♂️ 14 trained cyclists were recruited to complete two conditions (placebo and bicarb)
🏔️ Acute hypoxia was 16.7 ± 0.2 FiO2 (~1,900 equivalent altitude)
💊 The sodium bicarb supplement was ingested 90 mins prior to exercise
Results 📊
After sodium bicarb ingestion…
⏱️ 40-km time trial performance was enhanced by 1.2%
🩸 Blood pH and blood bicarbonate significantly increased pre-exercise and throughout
There were also no significant differences in gastrointestinal symptoms between bicarb and placebo ✅
Sodium bicarbonate ingestion can enhances endurance performance in hypoxia and therefore should be a consideration for competing at altitude 📈

Now that Jacob Kiplimo is running the London Marathon in April, after running 56:42 for the half marathon today, do we need to say anything more about the sub 2hr marathon?! For me, I think it could be a done deal and we are looking at the next marathon world record holder and a possible breaker of the 2 hr barrier in Marathon!

It’s insane that 🇺🇬’s dynamic duo,@joshuacheptege1 and @jacobkiplimo2 holds four world records in distance running. Their dominance across 5000m, 10,000m, 15km, and the half marathon proves they are in a league of their own, redefining the limits of human endurance.

What’s (not) in your supplement?🔬
Previous evidence has raised concerns of the contents of various sports nutrition products🚨
This new study examined the contents of 8 popular commercially-available carbohydrate gels vs their label-stated nutritional contents 🔍
Here’s what they found…
📃 = claimed content
🔬 = actual content
Gu Energy
📃 = 100 kcal / 23 g carbs
🔬 = 96.5 kcal / 23.9 g carbs
Honey Stinger
📃 = 100 kcal / 23 g carbs
🔬 = 99 kcal / 24.7 g carbs
Hüma
📃 = 100 kcal / 22 g carbs
🔬 = 91 kcal / 21.7 g carbs
Maurten (100)
📃 = 100 kcal / 25 g carbs
🔬 = 103 kcal / 25 g carbs
Näak
📃 = 200 kcal / 26 g carbs
🔬 = 176.5 kcal / 22.1 g carbs
Precision Fuel (PF90)
📃 = 360 kcal / 90 g carbs
🔬 = 349 kcal / 85.9 g carbs
Science in Sport (Beta Fuel)
📃 = 158 kcal / 40 g carbs
🔬 = 158 kcal / 39.2 g carbs
Spring Energy
📃 = 180 kcal / 45 g carbs
🔬 = 53 kcal / 12.5 g carbs
On average products contained significantly less energy than stated on the labels 📉
⚠️ The Spring Energy fell outside of the 95% limits of agreement for both energy and carbs ⚠️
👉 ~71% less energy (53 vs 180 kcal)
👉 ~72% less CHO (12.5 vs 45 g)
These findings have performance, clinical and legal implications🚨
