We've written to the Mayor of Hackney urging Hackney Council to end its twinning relationship with the city of Haifa. Here's why.

This is monstrous. Consider exactly what he is saying here and the context. He is an intelligent man. He is not a sholar of genocide but he has enough knowledge one must presume to gave read and understood the genocide convention. He knows that the definition of genocide does not relate to whether millions have been killed. Consider also by his logic if someone slaughtered 3 million British citizens this would not constitute genocide because it would be less than 5% of the population. Consider what he does not say. He accuses Israel of no crime , calls for no measure of accountability. He has no explanation as to why the ICJ has decided to investigate whether a geno ide has occurred and why a UN commission and a large body of genocide scholars are clear genocide has occurred, other than the one he has offered previously. They all hate Jews. Finally, Consider this. He accepts that 100 thousand Palestinians have been killed but the essential tone and message he wishes to convey is that this is not something that should shock , horrify and demand accountability. Sustaining support for Israel outweighs any concern for those lives. That , as I say, is truly monstrous.

The problem with @carolinelucas’s analysis here is that it simply ignores the Palestine perspective.
Much of what she says about the origins of Zionism is true. None of it alters the fact that for Palestinians it meant subjugation, dispossession and expulsion. And inevitably so. How else do you create an ethnically defined political entity in a territory that at the start of the process was almost entirely inhabited by people of a different ethnicity?
Palestinians relate to Zionism as it has been inflicted upon them. They have every right to do so and, conventionally, supporters of a liberation struggle take their lead from the oppressed group rather than dictating to them. Except in the case of Palestinians apparently.
Lucas is absolutely entitled to disagree with this. But the other problem here is her assertion the motion crossed “a very significant red line.” In other words – others are not allowed to disagree with her.
This takes us directly to the territory of the EHRC definition of antisemitism, clause 7 of which forbids Palestinians from describing Zionism as a “racist endeavour.” This is an act of racist gaslighting that forbids Palestinians from articulating what the vast majority regard as the core reality of their experience over the last century – the innate, unavoidable racism of the Israeli state.
It serves to demonise and delegitimise the Palestinian struggle and – by tainting Palestinians with the stigma of antisemitism – facilitates the dehumanisation of the Palestinian people. newstatesman.com/politics/gr…
