ALT Speech given at World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims: I can't help but think that, because of the scale of the problem, so many people are numbed to the severity of the situation. We try not to think about it, as a society. We try not to talk about it. We talk in euphemisms. We say things like: "It was an accident." But these are not accidents. These are results. These are the results of the choices we've made as a society. The choice, of some, to play down the severity of dangerous driving. The choice to treat speeding as socially acceptable. The choice to design streets that prioritise speed and traffic flow over people. And even when we acknowledge that these collisions, these acts of road violence are not accidents, we do our greatest to portray them as normal. Forgetting the human cost, we move swiftly and disrespectfully onto the "traffic bulletins" on how to avoid the aftermath. We say a car did it - rather than a driver - because it makes us feel better.
