Absolutely horrific service from @LGUS and @LGUSSupport. They damaged a water line installing a dishwasher. When I ran the dishwasher, it smelled like it was burning. Called the installation team, bit they refused to help. This is how you lose a customer.

I am devastated to learn that Prof. Heiner Eichner, Professor Emeritus for Indo-European Linguistics at the University of Vienna, has died in the 81st year of his life. Prof. Eichner was my teacher, supervisor, colleague and boss and accompanied me for 21 years of my life. /1

With great sorrow, we learnt about Patrick Hanks who failed to recover from long COVID and passed away yesterday, February 1st, 2024. Patrick was a leading character in lexicography for several decades, a promoter of the Corpus Pattern Analysis (pdev.org.uk) as well as one of our intellectual godfathers during his long-term collaboration with Adam Kilgarriff, the founder of Sketch Engine. In the last week, three people on reddit/r/statistics have asked about testing whether a sample came from a Gaussian distribution. The answer is that you should never test for normality. The result is a non-answer to the wrong question. allendowney.com/blog/2023/01…

After reading @vanderviana's book Teaching English with Corpora, I made a list of online corpus tools that either (a) I didn’t know, or (b) I wasn’t really familiar with before reading the book. I made this thread to spread the word about some of them to other language teachers.
