𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧: 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 One good thing about the weather we have had- as uneven as some of the small grains were during fungicide, the heat has really evened things out. If you decide to apply a pre-harvest, find the spot that likes to hold on longer than every other part of the field. Then, this is what Joe observes: 1. The peduncle- right under the head- should be yellow and the stems losing their green color. 2. Take the kernels from the middle of the head, and using your fingernail,  try to indent the kernel. If it holds without any “dough” or liquid squeezing out the end, it’s ready. If not, come back in a few days to the same spot and check it again. 𝐓𝐲𝐥𝐞𝐫’𝐬 𝐅𝐢𝐞𝐥𝐝 𝐍𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐬— 𝐖𝐡𝐚𝐭'𝐬 “𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐠” 𝐎𝐧 𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐖𝐞𝐞𝐤? Crops are starting to flower across the farm, and that means two questions come up a lot: 👉 𝘞𝘩𝘦𝘯 𝘴𝘩𝘰𝘶𝘭𝘥 𝘐 𝘴𝘱𝘳𝘢𝘺 𝘧𝘶𝘯𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘪𝘥𝘦？ 👉 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘪𝘴 𝘪𝘵 𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘺 𝘸𝘰𝘳𝘵𝘩 𝘪𝘵? Let’s break it down by crop: 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 Timing fungicide on wheat can be tricky. These two photos are from the same field. Notice how the headlands are already flowering, but the rest of the field is a day or two behind. That’s the challenge: you pull in thinking it’s go-time, but the majority still isn’t ready. Some products promote earlier applications, but I highly recommend waiting until at least 80% of the field is flowering for best results. 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐬 Peas are a little more straightforward. I usually suggest waiting until the first pod is formed to spray. Since peas flower over an extended period, spraying at first pod helps protect the plant through its entire reproductive stage. 𝐂𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐚 Canola is one of my favorite crops to scout because so much can change in just a few days. One common misconception: a bright yellow field = 100% bloom. Not quite! A field that’s glowing yellow is usually only about 50% flowered. The sweet spot for spraying? 30–50% bloom. Even if you’re slightly past that window, you can still get major benefits from a fungicide application. 𝑾𝒉𝒚 𝒔𝒑𝒓𝒂𝒚? Fungicide technology has come a long way. Today’s products not only protect against disease but can also extend plant life, leading to potential gains in yield and test weight. 📱 Curious about fungicide options and how to make it pencil out?
