A lot of people wonder what we do in the offseason, here’s one example, we screen for pre harvest sprouting. While producers don’t always experience Phs conditions, it’s imperative that the varieties we release aren’t susceptible. @arthuragronomy @NPWheat

And just like that our off season/counter season nursery is planted. This is just over 1/2 of the material. @arthuragronomy @NPWheat

It may be hard to see, but there is a couple hand harvest sickle crews in this photo. Between yesterday and today we will have harvested 4600 head rows. That means by end of day we’ll be out of the field. Special thanks to @arthuragronomy for lending a hand! @NPWheat

Tagging rows is hard on the back, but means the end is near. ~40k head rows evaluated and ~4700 selected, just shy of 12% S.I. Normally 15%, we had a bulge of material at this stage, discipline is key, material ebbs and flows at different stages. @arthuragronomy @NPWheat

I can’t wait to be out of the field to analyze 1st year data!

Harvested our SPY (Spring Pre Yield) nursery. ~3500 entries screened for Fhb, tan spot, BLS, and other traits. Lines moving forward to 1st year yield testing if they pass quality. Also confirming solid stem phenotype in a handful of populations is cool. @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

Sawfly found in Perley, MN. This is our increase and P&M (purity and multiplication). Cutting at a low incidence and severity, but present. It looks like the larvae died and we don’t understand why. @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

Question, historically wheat varieties have been named, usually around a theme. Recently (~10 yrs) numbering has become favorable, what do you prefer? @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

Finished row selections today with a moderate natural leaf rust infection throughout the nursery. The first 3 are sibs segregating for Lr resistance, the last is a susceptible check. The Puccinia Pathway is still present. @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

A very nice crop at Hoople, as well as some lodging. First pic is FG Heiner (on the left) with 2 elite experimental lines. The 2nd picture is SY Valda and the 3rd Faller (checks). @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

𝐏𝐫𝐞-𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐯𝐞𝐬𝐭 𝐁𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐝𝐨𝐰𝐧: 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐚𝐭 𝐄𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 One good thing about the weather we have had- as uneven as some of the small grains were during fungicide, the heat has really evened things out. If you decide to apply a pre-harvest, find the spot that likes to hold on longer than every other part of the field. Then, this is what Joe observes: 1. The peduncle- right under the head- should be yellow and the stems losing their green color. 2. Take the kernels from the middle of the head, and using your fingernail,  try to indent the kernel. If it holds without any “dough” or liquid squeezing out the end, it’s ready. If not, come back in a few days to the same spot and check it again. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to call us at (701)453-3300! #AFarmersSeedCompany

Great selection pressure for genetic resistance to leaf rust in our Argusville breeding nursery. Pics are 2 sibs and our rust spreader row (natural infection). @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

A lot going on in our Hoople location, lodging selection as crop development and height expression is on full display. FG Heiner displaying its great straw strength and potential, furthermore some cut worms need taken care of in our breeding material. @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

Found some leaf rust in our breeding nursery near Arthur. This was planted late after all our yield trials were in and will provide selection for genetic resistance. @NPWheat @arthuragronomy

Finished in Steele, this is pseudo black chaff and commonly liked to a stem rust gene Sr 2. A grower may have questions/concerns, rest assured it’s only cosmetic and is actually a good thing. A cool example of phenotypic markers. @arthuragronomy @NPWheat
