YIVO is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of David Biale (1949-2024), Emanuel Ringelblum Distinguished Professor of Jewish History Emeritus at UC Davis. Professor Biale was a longtime collaborator with the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research and served for many years on our Academic Advisory Council. A towering figure in Modern Jewish History, Biale’s contributions, which ranged from publications such as Gershom Scholem: Kabbalah and Counterhistory, Eros and the Jews, the magisterial Cultures of the Jews, and Hasidim: a New History, among numerous others, have enriched the field immeasurably.
