During and after the Holocaust, @jdforward helped European Jews find relatives by running ads on their behalf. I found 1000s of letters from ghetto residents, prisoners, war refugees, liberating soldiers, and survivors. I set out to tell their stories. forward.com/culture/555245/s…

“The US was the goldene medine […] but it was closed,” 86-year-old writer Alicia Freilich told me. “Venezuela became our goldene medine.” From exile, Alicia writes about Venezuela and reflects on her family’s incredible and tragic story. For @jdforward tinyurl.com/2a2cme68

Essential reading about what’s become a part of city life.
Behind New York City's e-bike and moped boom is a little-known ex-delivery worker who has quietly built a micromobility empire. I spent a year looking into him and the freewheeling industry through which he rose. My last story for @StreetsblogNYC streetsblogprojects.org/fly-…

Renee’s son Allen is 90 and buys TJ babka. He hadn’t realized it claimed to be his mother’s. Schick’s bakery was once a center of her community. Renee sold it in 1960 to another Orthodox family who operated it until 2011. After it closed, the brand changed hands four times. 4/5

How Schick’s became an asset of a Japanese multinational is a story of the commodification of ethnic identity. And about the boom of New York Jewish desserts at a time when Jewish New York bakeries are rapidly disappearing. 5/5 forward.com/culture/681793/t…

Today @BrianLehrer wondered about his grandparents listening to the Yiddish radio station WEVD named after the socialist Eugene V. Debs. Brian, it was the very popular radio station of the Jewish Daily Forward. ( @jdforward ).

And to answer your on question… By the mid-20th century the Forward was staunchly anti-Communist and had moved away from its socialist roots. Your family probably listened, not because of politics, but because WEVD was a center of Yiddish culture and community.
