Isobel and others: all the best, you can do great things - probably with a better work-life balance than typical of academia. You've got this :)

When a system has 100 brilliant people and only 5 places for them, then being one of those 5 HAS TO involve luck. The other 95 are good enough, too. Just less lucky. If you are one of those 95, you are still brilliant. You may also achieve More outside of academia 6/

Instead, too many treat postdocs as consumable items on research grants, making use of them and then discarding them and justify this to themselves by pontificating about how competitive academia is, boosting their own egos in the process. 5/

It is incumbent on successful academics to help postdocs understand the system they are fighting, provide real, meaningful mentorship and help explore routes to pursue their interests and use their talent inside or outside academia. 4/

I KNOW my career was strongly influenced by extreme good luck, getting a long term postdoc that made it possible to balance my career and family life, the good will of people who happened to be able to give me a leg up, all sorts of factors outside of myself. 3/

Anyone who suggests academia is a pure meritocracy from a position of success is just unwilling to confront their own privilege and the role of luck in their lives. Yes, academia is competitive. Yes, you have to be excellent and work hard. But those things are *not enough*. 2/

Isobel, I am sorry; I hope you find fulfillment and joy in your new career. I am also sorry, to you and other postdocs reading this thread, that there are replies from academics here implying that this reflects upon you (your abilities, network or anything else). It doesn't. 1/
