I need people to understand how difficult it is to get an NIH grant. You spend months writing a proposal, following strict guidelines that include a detailed multiyear budget, bios of everyone on your team, plans for participant safety & ethical conduct. Then you send it off -1/n

Cis-male faculty at Canadian Universities, have you ever called out sexism witnessed by colleagues in real time? Willing to share anecdotes about the context even if you can’t share names? Working on a story about gender equity for @UA_magazine. Please reach out and RT!

With another semester ending, here's your annual reminder that teaching evaluations systemically disadvantage women. Even when controlling for grades and other factors, students (esp. males) consistently give female professors lower scores. This can have serious ramifications.🧵

A few reminders to my fellow privileged white men who want to try to be non-assholes:
🧵
* You need to understand the concepts of privilege, power imbalance, implicit bias, positionality, intersectionity.
* It is not the job of any equity-deserving people to educate you.

“Intimidating” - I’m not intimidating, you’re intimidated and there’s a big difference.

While not foolproof, I always tell students to meet with other members of the prospective lab, without the PI present, to get a feel from the current students what the lab environment and mentoring style are like. Someone can even be a generally great PI, but not great for you.

Canadian here, your neighbour with cold winters and sensible gun laws. Did you know we’ve had 11 school shooting deaths? Not this month or this year, but total, in history. And absolutely no deaths in elementary schools. Why? Because gun laws save lives.
Listen. It’s the guns.

If you worked very, very hard and earned $5,000 a day, and worked every day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, never spending a dime, you’d still be less than halfway to being a billionaire. Nobody "earns" a billion dollars.

Thread for nearly-PhDones & newly-minted PhDs interested in Canadian postdocs, about postdoc funding and timing/planning, because this is absolutely "invisible curriculum" stuff that some PhD supervisors don't teach:

I always responded to strangers touching my pregnant belly by reaching out and rubbing their belly back. The look of shock was priceless. “I know, it’s weird to have a stranger rub your belly, right?”

One more thing. Tonight is a good reminder why we can never allow even an inch on laws guiding access to abortion in Canada. Not one god damn inch. Not ever. Our rights are so incredibly fragile
