It gets worse. They're not just attempting frame control or bad at defending themselves, their beliefs are actually just wrong and toxic.
Guys, if someone purports to be a spiritual guru of some kind whose work involves grand and noble sacrifices, RUN.

Wow they're really not beating the cult allegations with this response. The tone is so strange, forceful and vague, like the writer is demanding to be believed and not leaving any socially acceptable room for disagreement.

I use the word "cult" in a valence neutral way. For me, it means a culture with a strong differential meaning gradient between inside and outside (where 'meaning' is a constellation of patterns of engagement, i.e. perception-action relations). This could be also called the cults enclosing meaning membrane, by analogy to cells.
I do distinguish an "open cult", where two-way communication occurs across the cultural boundary, from a "closed cult", where there is not two-way communication (either one-way, as in pure missionary organizations, or none, as in separatist organizations).
Closed cults are dangerous because they have no correction mechanisms such as "friends outside the cult notice that there is dangerous things going on inside the cult".
If there is no enclosing meaning membrane, society loses the value of experimenting with differentiated forms of meaning. We get cultural homogeneity. We get individual atomization.
The potential loss of privacy from cell phones, combined with social media replacing in-person interactions, I believe, are two major factors in the massive weakening of the ability to create "weird but fundamentally positive" cults.
It is good for both for society and for individuals to open-cult-maxx.
A great place to start is an open cult of family: do you have a family? Is it strange in a fundamentally positive way? If not, you are forgoing the opportunity to benefit others by not performing small scale social experiments that yield value possibilities. And, your probably having less fun.

For ~14 yrs, I've tried to implement a browser-based deck-building game, to be able to make any change I want & find out what it'd be like. This fall I finally got it, by spending an hour or 2 a day for ~4 months in lengthy conversations with gen code tools in my IDE.

In the Q&A of my talk "How To Not Start A Cult", I was asked "in the spirit of reversing advice, can a group be not culty enough?" Yes, almost all of them, almost all the time. The right of this image is the excessively-enmeshed extreme. The left is the *middle* of the spectrum.

This will probably take years to develop, but I'd like to adapt "Spectrum Of Ecstasy" into a Live Action Strategy Boardgame played on a retreat, in which players arrange a series of meals, karaoke, & ceremonies which simulate communal skills.
Too ambitious. But I don't mind that

The other extreme is hyper-individuated alienation. Civic malnourishment. Almost everyone abandons voluntary associations for the slightest dissatisfaction. Life is reduced to employment, a spouse, children, pets, maybe some extended family, & most commonly, "couple-friends".

I originally wrote this library to er.. re-answer a stack overflow question. It has since been used for everything from analyzing high energy physics data to machine learning to computer graphics to pick and place machines to keeping flying cars aloft with people in them.
The original question is at: stackoverflow.com/questions/…
I first answered in the negative, then after Dan Piponi popped up with a comment, saying should be kind of possible, sweeping the asymptotics under the rug, I tied my brain into knots for ~3 days until I came up with a way to use observable sharing to get the equivalent of a classical AD"tape".
Nowadays the library much more directly implements the standard tape algorithm when running in reverse mode, and relegates the weird observable sharing topological sorting variant I came up with first (now called Kahn) to the cases where users want to generate the expression spread across lots of threads/cores, and doesn't want to deal with the contention of a traditional tape.
What I've always loved about this library is it makes almost no assumptions about the underlying Num instances. So you can do things like use it for symbolic computation, or even computing whole _programs_ that compute the derivatives in question, as long as the syntax tree type instantiates Num, etc.
This rather greatly reduced the pressure to make it directly efficient. Whenever I wanted to use it and it wasn't directly appropriate I just applied it to an EDSL and then compiled and ran that!
Reverse-mode AD in Haskell? It’s not just for machine learning —it's a game-changer for building reliable, high-assurance systems.

It's Pancake Day! Time to EAT PANCAKES in HONOR OF MACHIAVELLI!
What do pancakes have to do with the founder of modern political science?
Our boy Nick was obsessed with pancakes! & wrote about them in his "Art of War" Why pancakes? He'd been studying the ancients of course! 1/?

If I fail to solve the problem the first time, I don't presume trauma by default. I assume there's some other strategy or skills that I'm missing and look for those.
In fact, I am wary of any narratives that blame trauma for things "by default."

If you are feeling lost, vulnerable, even despairing: an optimistic ideology that promises definite answers and guarantees unlimited progress is a beneficial lifeline. Critical rationalism is one such.
Then it can become dysfunctional. Valuable post by @kasratweets (link: 👇)
