Both have failed. The secessionist movement in Hargeisa is a prime example of the failure of one, and the rest of the country is an example of the failure of the other. No country and no society can succeed by building what is supposed to help them thrive around what divides them. Not only is it illogical, but it also reflects a profound conceptual failure —the inability to conceive of a political community beyond the particularisms that constitute it.

📜Instead, UN Treaty Series Volume 374 shows that Great Britain signed an "Accord Provisoire" (a temporary agreement) explicitly designed as a brief transitional bridge to the south! 📜

They completely erase the urban terrorism. They hide the story of a high school bombing cell and a hijacked commercial airliner.
It started in July 1984. A terrorist group planted massive explosives inside the central post office in Hargeisa.
The blast destroyed Hargeisa’s communications hub. The SNM went on the radio and proudly took credit for the attack.
The government launched a massive manhunt. Authorities uncovered an active urban bombing cell.
The culprits were local high school students.
The state sentenced seven of these student bombers to death.
Four months later the SNM terrorists took brutal revenge.
Armed men stormed a Somali Airlines Boeing 707 midair. The hijackers beat the pilot and shot a security guard in the chest.
They forced the plane to land in Ethiopia with 108 hostages onboard. Ethiopia was the foreign sponsor funding the rebels.
The hijackers then issued a chilling ransom demand.
They threatened to blow up the plane unless the government freed those exact seven high school bombers.

Looks like colonialism 2.0 to me. What the Abessinians and the Europeans did not achieve in the late 19th century - to cut out a further part of the Somali territories (in the northeast) - is now done by Somalis themselves, right? Instead of seeking to establish translocal ties and strengthen the control over Somali resources (the coast, the land, trade, natural resources offshore), Somalis fancy self-division?! Who will profit? Likely not structurally disenfranchised and military weak Somli fiefdoms like Somaliland, Puntland, South West State etc. Rather, established hegemons like Ethiopia and powerful oil-rich monarchies like UAE (and others) which all are in bed with the USA and Israel will eat the biggest piece of the cake. Some crumbs will be swallowed by the hungry Somali elites. The majority of ordinary Somalis will remain poor and vulberable. Sorry for this pessimistic scenario. But I really do not get why Somalis do so eagerly self-divide 150 years after the colonial partition has kicked off so many problems that held Somalis in a weak position for decades.
