NEW Espionage Alert: MI5 has warned British academics that they are helping Chinese intelligence officers upgrade their spying arsenal. More than 100 researchers have contributed to projects funded by the China General Technology Research Institute.
And university staff are inadvertently helping Beijing to boost their AI systems, providing insights into cybersecurity, upgrading covert communications systems and improving steganography (hiding secret messages).
MI5 warned that the “primary purpose” of the CGTRI is to “fund academic research that directly improves MSS (Chinese Ministry of State Security) technical capability for espionage”.

We revealed earlier today that asylum seekers are having to be told “men and women are equal” in the UK.
The Home Office has issued new guidance to arrivals telling them “this means women can work, study, travel and make their own choices”.
And officials are sensationally telling migrants not to rape or beat women, and that sex with children is illegal.
In tomorrow’s paper, we declare that this pamphlet is an ‘admission’ of the danger some asylum seekers pose to women and girls.
Exclusive: Asylum seekers are being told “men and women are equal” in the UK amid mounting fears over integration and cultural values.
The Home Office has issued new guidance to arrivals telling them “this means women can work, study, travel and make their own choices”.
They also detail what rape is under UK law in a new booklet: "Consent is needed in every situation. This means even if you are married or in a relationship with someone, they must consent to sex every time.
"If you have sex with someone without their consent, this is called rape. Rape is a serious crime in the UK. You could go to prison, lose your support and accommodation, and it will affect your asylum claim."
WATCH: The brilliant @StephSpyro and I discuss the @Daily_Express's fight to reveal how 1,500 FNOs are living in asylum accommodation. It was quite the battle with the Home Office.
My 11-month investigation revealed some 1,509 convicted foreign criminals have been given taxpayer-funded homes even though they are eligible for deportation.
It's a huge scandal. And believe me, we are fighting for more.
Critics said our probe “reveals that the Home Office is paying for illegal migrant criminals to be scattered in communities”.

Breaking: A British vessel is about to dock in Boulogne after a huge rescue operation in the Channel.
It’s the first time this rare event, used to save lives at sea, has been caught on camera. The video, taken by the Daily Express, comes after we revealed a fire broke out on a dinghy carrying around 160 people.
Medics are currently helping migrants off a French vessel.
