U.S found Christopher Smith and his son guilty of paying Ksh 52M in bribes to Kenyan IIEC officials for ballot boxes printing tender.
Surprisingly, the Kenyan government never took action against the IIEC officials who took the bribe.
Isak Hassan, the then IIEC Chairperson was shortlisted as Court of Appeal judge after serving as chairperson of IPOA.

All people of goodwill and supporters of democracy across the world are relieved to see the trumped up treason charges against Comrade Tundu Lissu collapse, following his acquittal today.
These charges should never have been brought in the first place. Lissu’s only crime was to call for basic reforms to the electoral architecture in Tanzania to guarantee a fair process. He has lost over two years of his life in custody as he fought off the charges.
We encourage Ndugu Lissu, the CHADEMA Party and all our Tanzanian brothers to take heart and remain strong in their pursuit of justice and freedom, in the knowledge that all forces of regression are usually ultimately defeated.

We condemn the judicial ambush of CHADEMA Chairman Tundu Lissu, whose acquittal on capital treason was immediately followed by a four-year prison sentence for incitement. This is a grave assault on the rule of law and a calculated attempt to silence the demand for democratic reforms.

Tanzania : Conviction and sentencing of opposition leader Tundu Lissu a travesty of justice
Opposition party leader Tundu Lissu was yesterday acquitted of treason but wrongfully convicted of incitement and sentenced to four years in prison for peacefully exercising his human rights.
The proceedings were marred by serious violations of his right to a fair trial. He was denied confidential access to his lawyers, effectively forcing him to represent himself. Live broadcasts of the proceedings were disconnected, while at least two international trial observers were arbitrarily arrested, allegedly tortured and deported. He was also held in inhumane detention conditions, in a death row cell, with limited access to religious services. The conviction and sentence cannot be considered as the outcome of a fair trial.
The Tanzanian authorities must quash Tundu Lissu’s conviction and sentence, immediately and unconditionally release him, and end the misuse of treason and other laws to silence government critics.

RESTORE THE RULE OF LAW IN TANZANIA
PASNet demands the immediate, unconditional release of CHADEMA Chairperson Tundu
Lissu, an end to the judicial weaponization of Tanzanian courts, and independent
international accountability for state-sponsored atrocities during the post-election crisis.
On 6 November 2026, Tanzania’s High Court acquitted Tundu Lissu of bogus treason charges after
he endured 577 days of arbitrary detention. Yet, in a glaring act of judicial gymnastics, the court
manufactured a conviction on uncharged "incitement" allegations, sentencing him to four years in
prison. This outcome exposes a deeply compromised judicial system that functions not as an arbiter
of justice, but as an enforcement tool for political persecution.
