Strange and wondrous creatures: plankton and the origins of life on Earth

The long read: Without plankton, the modern ocean ecosystem – the very idea of the ocean as we understand it – would collapse. Earth would have no complex life of any kind

You just took away pensioners' winter fuel payments. That was your alternative to taxing the bonuses - not the wages, just the bonuses - of the people running BANKS.

Love this poster from 1945. This time again, it's Labour who will stand up for pensioners, defending the triple lock & winter fuel payments. xitter.cf/labour_history/status/…

A fabulous #WildFlowerHour! Huge thanks to everyone who shared pix of the lovely wild plants you've spotted in bloom this week, #ByTheSea, by rivers & across Britain & Ireland! Have a great week & look out for the next @wildflower_hour challenge set by the amazing @botany_beck!

Today your Labour MP in Cardiff West voted against removing the cruel two child benefit cap. This is a cruel policy which ultimately leads to our most vulnerable children suffering. He voted against this despite nearly a third of children in Cardiff West living in poverty.

This is how cork is harvested in Portugal

How Cork Is Made In Portugal

The process of harvesting the cork oak takes precision, years of practice, and a good axe.

Update, adopted wild flower roadside verge looking good, one or two locals claiming it’s scruffy, but the bees and bugs don’t agree, they seem happy, great show of wild carrot, Knapweed, Yellow Rattle and Musk Mallow @Buzz_dont_tweet @Love_plants

In 2022 I adopted a highway verge in my village, cut, scarified, sowed wildflowers rolled, permissions and risk assessments. All good until cut in June by @WSHighways even after agreement, I haven’t given up, please don’t give up either. @kfbok @Buzz_dont_tweet #wildflowerhour

Post Office destroys lives, Water companies pollute our rivers, CCRC leaves innocent people to rot in prison, Covid ministers’ incompetence costs thousands of lives but nobody is punished. Stop traffic on M25 & get 5 years in prison. This is brutally unjust theguardian.com/environment/…

Five Just Stop Oil activists receive record sentences for planning to block M25

Campaigners receive longest ever sentences for non-violent protest after being convicted of conspiracy to cause public nuisance

🥣 Oliaigua, the traditional soup of #Menorca, is perfect in any season: cold with figs in summer or hot with potatoes in winter. 🍅 Tomatoes, onion, garlic, green pepper, oil, water, and bread create this energetic and delicious delicacy. 🤤

The idea that improving benefits "doesn't deal with the root causes of poverty" is one of the most perniciously bad ideas in politics. You know what's cut pensioner poverty in half over the last 25 years? Giving them more money!

There is a simple act that could lift 300,000 children out of poverty - namely scrapping the two-child limit. There should be a timetable to scrap it within weeks. My response to the #KingsSpeech.

I’ll always take history, faded grandeur and location over the latest fashion! The Hotel Inglaterra in Havana, one of my faves…

Thanks to @seatsixtyone for recommending the Hotel Ingleterra in #Havana 🇨🇺 It's the oldest hotel in the city, but has been well preserved, even if it is a little rough around the edges 🙃 $65 a night Inc breakfast 🍳 #Cuba #NonstopEurotrip
