Bright eyes, glowing smile, joy that fills a room. We have all seen it on the face of a child with a Down syndrome diagnosis.
October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month. Pediatricians and pediatric healthcare professionals have the privilege of walking alongside families from the first moments of birth - when navigating a Down syndrome diagnosis is filled with uncertainty and the unknown. As the child and family grow together, pediatricians remain an important part of celebrating health and developmental milestones, watching as acceptance transforms into the realization that their child is a tremendous gift — not only to the family, but to the world. Our world is made more beautiful with every child, regardless of the number of chromosomes they possess.

"'You can choose between a live son or a dead daughter.'
Countless parents have heard some variation of these words — from physicians, medical associations, media outlets or online activists.
If children believe they’re born in the wrong body and can’t get sex-change treatments, the argument goes, they’re at high risk of committing suicide.
No claim has swayed more parents to let their kids get puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and even surgeries.
The same claim has struck fear into the hearts of lawmakers considering restrictions on such treatments.
But as we show in a new report, the suicide threat isn’t true... "

BREAKING: AAPLOG and the @ACPeds have have submitted a historic joint amicus brief advocating for Baby Gabriel's best interests before the U.S. Supreme Court and supporting McKenna West's guardianship petition.
Every child, regardless of diagnosis or circumstance, deserves excellent medical care, strong advocacy, and guardianship that protects them when they cannot speak for themselves. Baby Gabriel deserves a voice and life-affirming medical care.

Our pediatricians @ACPeds stand with parents who protect their children from sex-rejecting interventions and the harms of gender ideology. No child is born in the wrong body. They need to be told they are loved just as they were made. We are a 501c3. Please support the work we are doing to protect these vulnerable kids. Www.acpeds.org
A California father had a court-protected right requiring his written consent before his son could undergo “gender identity related surgery.” He refused consent.
Yet doctors at a University of California gender clinic implanted a puberty-blocking device in his son’s arm anyway.
@ACPeds has filed an amicus brief urging the U.S. Supreme Court to hear Hudacko v. Regents of the University of California and defend the fundamental rights of parents in their children’s medical care.

McKenna West was pressured to abort baby Gabriel due to a diagnosis of a heart condition. She fled to Texas, gave birth, and because of legal interventions, baby Gabriel is alive and undergoing treatment.

Last week, CMS finalized a rule ending Medicaid funding for sex-rejecting procedures for minors.
This week, we sent letters to nine states that have historically spent the most Medicaid dollars on these procedures, asking them to clarify how and when they will implement these changes to protect America’s children and taxpayer dollars:
CA, MA, NC, NH, NY, OH, OR, PA, and WA.

A child’s right to life should never depend on a contract, a diagnosis, or whether he meets the expectations of commissioning adults.
In the wake of the McKenna West surrogacy case, the American College of Pediatricians (@ACPeds) and the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists (@AAPLOG) are speaking together in defense of Baby Gabriel and all preborn children facing abortion because of a disability or medical diagnosis.
“A prenatal diagnosis does not diminish a child’s humanity or dignity,” said ACPeds Executive Director @DrJillSimons . “Children diagnosed with serious medical conditions deserve the same thing every pediatric patient deserves: compassionate, appropriate medical care based on their individual needs, not a judgment that their lives are not worth living.”
AAPLOG CEO Dr. Christina Francis (@DrFrancis4Life) added: “A preborn child’s health should never be at the whim of adults who decide whether they receive care or die by induced abortion.”
ACPeds and AAPLOG call on policymakers, physicians, and the public to reject induced abortion as a means of discriminating against preborn children because of a diagnosis, disability, or medical condition, including in commercial surrogacy arrangements.

For over a decade, ACPeds has warned that these procedures can result in irreversible damage to children and adolescents, including infertility, impaired sexual function, diminished bone density, altered brain development, and other lasting harms."

Statement from Dr. Quentin Van Meter, @ACPeds Past President, about the HHS report exposing troubling billing practices for pediatric sex-rejecting interventions and CDC bringing recognition to detransitioners in medical coding:
“The medical profession cannot claim to practice evidence-based medicine if the data itself is distorted or incomplete. If procedures are being billed under diagnoses that do not accurately describe why they were performed, that demands investigation. And if patients who recover from sex-identity distress or regret previous interventions are invisible in the coding system, we cannot accurately measure outcomes. The College urges continued federal oversight, rigorous enforcement of accurate medical coding requirements, and the development of appropriate medical pathways for individuals suffering complications or seeking restorative care following sex-rejecting interventions.”
