On this Labor Day, let us remember that it wasn’t the CEOs and billionaires who saved us during COVID-19. It was the janitors, nurses, cleaning crews, grocery and food workers with their hard, often invisible labor.

Folks actually want to debate old wine in new bottles solutions that didn't work the last time around and aren't working in England right now. For instance, when we adopted decoding approaches to the exclusion of meaning-based approaches during the No Child Left Behind era, we spent billions and got nothing. Not saying to swing back over to solely meaning-based approaches, they didn't produce the needed results either. The solution is to take the best practices from each approach and use them, most especially making sure the approach fits the kids. In my opinion, publishers of materials for code-based approaches are using PR tactics to push for the exclusive use of their materials, and that is good for the publishers but not good for the kids. Paul, @plthomasEdD, is simply pointing out one of those tactics- i.e., exaggerating the size of the problem.

Balanced literacy era was flat reading scores
SOR era has seen scores drop and drop and drop
No excuses

Today's blog discusses an interview with Lisa Stringfellow, a middle school teacher/author. Her biography indicates she writes for her twelve-year-old self, the kid waiting to be the brown-skinned hero of an adventure. She will do several workshops at the upcoming Write to Learn conference #WTLMO in Columbia, Missouri. Please have a look and listen. doctorsam7.blog/2025/01/25/l…

FLUENCY FRIDAY!
Here’s a favorite poem for the New Year. I hope you and your students like it too!
(Fluency is artfully developed through rehearsal (repeated reading) and expressive performance. )

If people think students should be reading authentic texts, including whole novels, plays, and other complex texts, they should advocate for curricular autonomy, better stocked (and uncensured) classroom libraries, less testing, and more support for struggling students. Thanks ✌️

This is what was purchased for my school. I really wanted my school to get the Jump Rope Readers from Heinemann because they are decodables that make sense, but that option fell through with the introduction of SOR laws in my state.

This week, I interviewed Bruce Howett. We talk about major shifts happening in the SOR world, shifts that might promote finding more common ground in the reading wars. I also talk about how to solve some of the problems with current basal readers. ENJOY
