Everyone is always rooting for you. Your parents want you to be a great son. Wife wants you to be a great husband. Your boss wants you to be a slam dunk hire. Every first date you’ve ever been on they’ve been rooting for you to get laid. Every time you started to tell a joke people hoped it would have a hilarious punch line. Your proximity to anyone is a reflection of themself, meaning the deck is never stacked against you, and your failures are completely your own

Notice that pro-Israel protests worldwide always show respect to the flag of the native country and peacefully respect its laws, while “pro-Palestine” flags appear alongside anarchy, senseless destruction, and contempt toward whatever nation they “inhabit”

A mile wide and an inch deep. We open with an exaggerated satire of a bafoonish right wing tycoon who has caused an environmental disaster in service of oil profits. Nervous POC scientists are shouted down by white generals who want to just nuke the problem, President John Goodman has Trump’s exact eyebrows, they joke in cabinet meetings about no women being present. You get the sense you’ve been there before and the format is well worn, and then it’s revealed that actually the movie is a play being put on by the nephew of the Tycoon himself. Thats it. There’s nothing else there. Inarritu shows us a cliche and then shows us that he knows it’s a cliche. A didactic two hours of joyless meta-commentary with no sense of mystery or ambiguity. Busywork administered by a substitute teacher. A long story your mom tells you on the phone that goes nowhere, and can be listened to while doing the dishes
