I wonder if Penny Mordant has realised the pinnacle of her political career was carrying a sword while dressed as a Greek flight attendent?

As the issue of compensation for miscarriages of justice is rightly in the news, it’s timely to note that in 2014, the government changed the law to make it all but impossible for people wrongly convicted and imprisoned to claim compensation.

The Times knows how to alienate its readers. Today’s obit of the lovely Margaret McDonagh claims “secured a science degree at Brunel University”. No, she got a degree in ‘Government’ (aka as Politics). She was an excellent student, I was proud to have taught her.

This is a sensible balance in line with @matthewclifford & @priyalakhani’s work with Patrick Vallance last month - imposing a single rulebook when we don’t yet know where things will end up would be a mistake. gov.uk/government/news/uk-un…

Agreed! Also used for pre-legislative scrutiny.
SELECT CTTEES I have been a special adviser and witness to several SCs. Introduced by none other than Margaret Thatcher SCs are a minor miracle of UK politics. They really do work. Under-resourced they perform heroic feats of holding of the Govt to account.

The Investigatory Powers Act (called by some the Snoopers Charter) has been on the statute book for 5 years. The Home Secretary was required to produce a progress report and did so last month but it did not cover all aspects of the legislation. /1

Enjoyed a lot of @ICOnews #DPPC2022 conference today. Feels like a change in the right direction under @JCE_IC (hopefully!). More engaging and team work with us to get things to help DPOs, visible ICO staff giving decent advice and examples, & friendlier vibe all round.
