BTC has a much higher marketcap per $ invested than other assets,such as gold or S&P 500.Factors include supply and demand,volatility and the investor risk appetite For every $ invested in gold,market cap increases by an avg of $0.05 & for S&P 500,it increases by $0.01.

While this is a plausible explanation, the BTCC volume is not the only measure of interest in Bitcoin. Other metrics include # of active addresses and hashrate. It could be that people are simply holding onto their Bitcoin rather than trading it.
