While everyone is still thinking about rocket thrusters on road vehicles… does anyone remember Bosch demonstrating a cold gas thruster that would kick in if it sensed the bike was losing grip during a turn?

I hear a lot of arguments about how this isn't their priority. Nah, I don't buy it. AI labs love to brag about how claude writes a C compiler from scratch. Rewrites bun in rust. Chatgpt solves math. And every single time, either the task is super verifiable with lots of human made tests, or there's controversy about leaked chats to openai. If they could spin up an agent swarm to rewrite chatgpt desktop in rust and raylib (for example) we would be hearing for months about that. And I would be very happy! I love using fast software. And look, you would be the first AI lab to do it! Perfect marketing, sells itself. Why can't they spend at least 10min to kick off that swarm? Either they have tried already and failed so miserably that we have heard nothing, or worse, they really believe electron can deliver the highest quality product. You can't tell me a company that wrote how they stopped triggering 6900 react hooks on keypress has solved engineering. I don't believe you.
why software engineers have this low self esteem? It's very easy to disprove this. Look at AI lab engineering outputs! They hire top talent, and have unlimited tokens + unreleased powerful models. Can you see impressive software built by them? By impressive I mean: - low RAM / cpu usage - good UI UX - no blatant bugs - minimal downtime - obviously no electron ... why isn't this obvious?

The usefulness of Amazon’s 6-page memo has been nuked by AI-generated text (employees sit in meetings suspecting text is AI and tune out). Suspicious memos tagged as AI;DR (AI, didn’t read).

Nearly every phone and computer on Earth relies on one plain-text file to know what time it is. When a country changes its clocks with a few weeks’ notice, or Morocco pauses daylight saving for Ramadan, someone has to update that file. Since 02005, that someone has been Paul Eggert, a computer science professor at UCLA, who does it as a volunteer.  Take a look at this great data visualization to see the full story:  na2.hubs.ly/H08qtQC0

One of the many reasons AI agents are over-hyped. AI cos have got so used to invading other people's territory to steal their intellectual property, it never occurred to these "geniuses" that banks, online merchants and airlines might block their access. Hysterically funny!
notice.. > Delta is blocking AI agents from booking flights > JPMorgan Chase and Charles Schwab block agents from accessing accounts > Yelp requires paid data licensing for agents > Amazon has blocked Grok bot and other shopping agents. the internet is starting to block AI agents that were supposed to do everything for us

the whole thing is a sham. we have tools that can replace adobe products and they're better than adobe products, but the thing that makes adobe - well - adobe can't be replicated with claude and codex. things like proprietary licensed tech, brand recognition and such are part of why people immediately pick adobe. you have other options like affinity, davinci, and more, but people don't pick that. they know of photoshop. this is what artcraft doesn't understand.
it’s too early to say ArtCraft is doomed and it’s also too early to say it’s killed Adobe give it time lmao

It's quite sad seeing all the high-quality first-party apple developer tools we've lost. Older programs used to have so much work and care put into them that none of the newer ones will ever seem to get. Reality Composer Pro seems to be the exception, but it's not even native.

> it is very very likely that fable is better than you in every branch of software It is faster than me. It is cheaper than me. It knows way more trick than I do. It also indeed knows every codebase that is out there. But for some reason, it's dogshit at actual engineering. Tries to cheat its way through problems instead of fixing them constantly. Completely fails to produce sensible abstractions. The test suite it produces are both enormous and somehow misses the behavior you care about while being tightly coupled to the implementation. I wish it could do these things for me, but it can't today, and doesn't show much signs of improving. I think people saying this are either doing it for the views, or because they are the ones who produced the mountain of shit software we ase dealing with are are indeed worse than fable in every way. Not something I'd brag about.
the coding agent haters are getting dunning-kruger'd so hard right now do you really think that your engineering ability is better than the models at this point? it is very very likely that fable is better than you in every branch of software it has been trained on all the code of the internet, it knows almost every trick in the book, all the design patterns of every domain, every single low-level detail, every bit-twiddling hack, it's read every single blog post from every cracked engineer that ever existed do you really think you can beat it? do you really think you can be more creative than it? unless you are 99th percentile expert in some niche domain of software, it simply is not possible. sorry.

cell phones aren’t druglike, they’re carlike. even if you consciously want to opt out, you can’t, because everyone expects you to have and use one to interact with society. i cannot even use the laundry machines in my building without being forced to use the laundry app.
Cell phone addiction is an absolute thermonuke to the brain and nobody 'takes it seriously' because it is not clear that there is any solution in a world where the revealed preference of everyone across the globe, regardless of income, race, age, any factor whatsoever, would rather be on their phone than do *anything* else. Deciding "I use this too much" and meaningfully altering one's behaviour doesn't seem to have much success for any of the very small minority of people with the sentience or self-reflection to realize how bad it is. Most people seem to think of it as an unproductive habit at most, rather than an addiction. Any attempt to speak seriously about this is met with derision, accusations of pretentiousness. There is no real solution to it. The future of human cognition fifty years down the line is horrifying if you stop and think about it for even a moment.

I keep saying it: Doug Ford has about 15 scandals that, on their own would’ve brought down any other government. And yet, no updates on any of these investigations. When is the Ford government gonna be held accountable for literally anything?
Ontario somehow manages a billion-dollar scandal every year now that would have sunk a government had it happened a decade ago, and yet no investigation has reported back and you can bet no one will end up in jail. A billion dollars defrauded from OSAP and the only punishment will be inflicted on those who didn’t do anything wrong. Every bad actor will take it as a sign that they can continue abusing the systems that they are. In the past these scandals (Greenbelt, Skills Development Fund, now OSAP) would be the top news story until there was some accountability. Now? Nothing. Makes me so angry!

Agree to disagree. But let's chat timeline. If Musk actually sells this car with the rear thrusters in 2028 ill buy and publically give away $10k worth of your epic ModRetro Gameboys. If Musk *does not* sell this car in 2028. (He won't) then you buy and give away $10k worth of my Paradox Wheelchairs. Easy money. (for me).
Replying to @ZacksJerryRig
You did say it, but it isn't true. This is a performance car, the whole point is to accelerate, turn, and brake at a higher level of performance than a typical car. Larger engines, better brakes, active aero etc are definitely not useless, they define the entire category.

Stop falling for this non-sense. A lot of these 'native PC ports / recomps' are nothing but emulation wrapped up a fancy exe using AI. Please explain to me why this 'native port' has a shadPS4 folder, and game patches used on shadPS4.

The main advantage of human written code is that there exists a human who wrote the code, understands it and can answer questions about it without lying or hallucinating.
AI can obviously be used to be more productive, and there's no ontological reason why human-written code is inherently better but the sheer amount of slop generated internally despite passing *700 tests* is simply staggering. there's just no alternative to cleaning up the slop

The classic NIMBY position: Instead of accessing opportunites for jobs, relationships and experiences you should move to the middle of nowhere and either spend 4 hours a day commuting or lose 50% of your lifetime earnings. Hard pass. Just build enough housing.
There are lots of cheap places to live in this country, and it would make sense for people who cannot afford rent in new york city to be displaced to those places.
