There is only one way to fix crime in DC. We must repeal the Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act.

With a heavy heart, the DC Police Union regrets to announce the passing of Investigator Apolinar D. Nunez, affectionately known as “Nuney.”
Nuney joined MPD on August 6, 2007, and most recently was assigned to the Violent Crime Suppression Division. A decorated Army combat veteran, devoted husband, and loving father to five daughters, he dedicated his life to serving others. His kindness, generosity, and friendship will never be forgotten.
Please keep his wife, daughters, loved ones, and fellow officers in your prayers during this heartbreaking time.
Rest peacefully brother. You will always be part of our Union family.

Breaking: DC police say shots were fired around 4:34pm at 20th Street and New Hampshire Ave NW in Dupont Circle. The shooting sent a large crowd of young people scattering, most toward the Dupont Metro. Police have found at least one shell casing. So far no reports of injuries, MPD says. MPD, Metro Transit PD, US Park Police are all working crowd control.
According to this study by Johns Hopkins and the University of Maryland, “violence interruption” actually increased violence in DC.
For years D.C. has held out hope that violence interruption programs would meaningfully decrease shootings and killings. A recent study finds they may have done the opposite. Now the fate of the entire initiative is up in the air, reports @jennygathright: washingtonsun.com/metro/dc-v…

There's a lot of "well, actually, crime is trending down" and "look at our charts," but at the same time DC restaurants are having to hire private security like they're operating in Guatemala City or Tegucigalpa. Clearly, there is a major problem.

DC Police are investigating after shots were reportedly fired during rush-hour near First Street and Pierce Street NE in NoMa/Washington DC 🔫
Police were called out to the area of the Starbucks on the 1200 block of First Street NE at around 5:20pm for a shooting.
It is believed that shots were fired in the area, but no injuries were reported. DC Police put a lookout out for four males who fled on Lime bikes and were reportedly fleeing from National Guard while “tossing weapons.”
MPD’s Falcon 🚁 was just up circling the area for the shooters, who are believed to be on the loose. Detectives have just arrived to the scene as well.
This is an active and developing scene, with more information expected to be released from officials soon… #DCCrime – at Washington, DC

Today, we remember the tragic events of the Navy Yard shooting, which occurred on this day in 2013. We honor the 12 innocent lives lost and the bravery of the first responders who risked their own safety to protect others. We continue to stand with the survivors and families affected by this tragedy.

Security and privacy are fundamental rights for our residents -- we must always balance the dual important duties of our government to protect the public’s safety and to safeguard our civil liberties.
Camera technology, when used properly, can be a useful tool to assist law enforcement in locating stolen vehicles, suspects in violent crimes, and missing persons, but all technology must be used in accordance with strict policies that prevent misuse.
Flock Safety cameras have been under contract with MPD since December 2024 as a tool in their efforts to drive down crime and work across the region collaboratively. As Chairwoman of the Committee on the Judiciary and Public Safety, I have continued to question MPD about its use of Flock cameras during public hearings and through ongoing oversight and conversations to ensure proper use. However, in light of recent public concerns regarding the use of Flock cameras in DC, I am again seeking answers in writing from MPD about its Flock camera policies and how it has been used in investigations to date. The public deserves transparency and must understand how this technology is being used in our communities.

.@alyssafowers and I obtained new data from U.S. Park Police and analyzed thousands of arrests. We found the agency has hired more than 300 new officers in D.C. in the past year.
Experts tell me they are acting more like a city police department than ever — except, unlike D.C. police, they've been authorized to chase cars and collaborate with immigration agents. Plus, the up to $70k signing bonus means aspiring law enforcement professionals in the DMV are more likely to chose Park Police than MPD.

An unusual moment in policing is taking shape: police unions, civil rights groups, conservative politicians and grassroots activists find themselves in an unlikely alliance calling for rapidly expanding surveillance tech to be reined in.
A “tipping point,” says @ProfFerguson.
Resistance to Flock has made its way to the DMV. In Washington, the head of the city police union said MPD used the cameras to investigate sworn officers. And officials in Alexandria signaled this week they don’t want Flock in their city.
