When you give students the "right" task difficulty in instruction, engagement & completion goes up. When math ed trainers act like an interesting task is what accounts for engagement, they are missing a really important ingredient which is child proficiency. Partner reading and paragraph shrinking led to large effects with 86 8th graders randomly assigned to treatment or control group. Effects were + regardless of student variables (EL, SPED, FRPL). @McDuesenberg @Romeromonica28 @ILAToday @CECMembership @reading_league @NCILiteracy

Keep adding in unknowns until the kid makes 3 mistakes while rehearsing any fact. Mistakes could be on the new fact, the fact, the just learned, or even the knowns. If they don't say it correctly within 2 or 3 seconds, it is an error. 3 errors, stop. journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…

One thing I failed to mention on the podcast. With the school we intervened with the state math test score was at the 35th percentile before the intervention. After 4 years of 4 min/day timed practice, they were at the 80th percentile. Insane growth per instructional minute.
