I spent the last two weeks exploring Therapy Influencer Culture, and for this week's article, I will be sharing what I found. Prior to this, I didn't even have a TikTok account, and the results were...wild. I'll also be discussing the factors leading up to this along with examples of reputable voices in the field. Shoutout to @JonathanShedler, @AlobhaPatrick, and @psychotherapym8 as examples of some of the reputable voices I'll be mentioning. corygradlcsw.substack.com/p/…

This may be the dividing line separating skilled and unskilled therapists. Unskilled therapists see pain and victimhood. Skilled therapists also see the hate and aggression and know how work with it. How do we know there is hate and aggression? Because the patient is human. 👇
“It is one thing to empathize with patients’ experiences of injury and victimization but we must be able to empathize with their negative impulses as well, including sadistic or hateful wishes to attack or to wreak vengeance.” —M. Carsky & F. Yeomans, “Overwhelming Patients and Overwhelmed Therapists”

The therapy influencer type existed way before TikTok. In the movie, What about Bob, Dr. Marvin represents the rise of the "celebrity therapist", an author writing catchy self-help titles meant to distill deeply complex psychiatric challenges into mass-marketable slogans. The film illustrates how easily a clinical phrase can lose its intended precision, becoming a highly adaptable buzzword in the hands of the public. Throughout the film, Bob repeats the phrase "baby steps" as he violates the therapist's boundaries by tracking him down to his summer home. It's a fun watch and I highly recommend it to anyone following me. youtube.com/watch?v=ncFCdCjB…

There's a type of therapist that seems to be stuck in the mentality of a play therapist regardless of context or setting. I saw a lot of this on social media, and what I mean by this type of therapist is the following qualities: -always positive and affirming, overly cute explanations for sensitive topics, lots of toys, and a rote way of carrying out interventions. But Cory, are you Hatin' on play therapists? No, I'm saying there's a time and place for it. Someone brought to my attention that a first responder certified therapist was conducting mandatory assessment in a police department. The topic of passive SI was compared to thinking about Disney World. "It's fine if you think about it, as long as you don't plan on taking the trip." A colored chart was brought to show the results of their assessment that completed before the session. Squeeze toys in the shape of police cars were handed out at the end of the session. This is a field that wants to be taken seriously while also conducting itself in an unserious manner.

TikTok is a cesspool. The content on that platform is WILDLY unregulated. Someone brought to my attention that someone seeking out aid for self harm urges and SI can encounter content that actually encourages it alongside support resources. In fact, someone recorded it and sent it to me, showcasing that you can encounter a string of triggering images and messages. People say that the platform is good for 'raising awareness of mental health issues.' There are around 6 mental health awareness months in America, and I have no idea of what the end game is besides saying, "did you know mental health exists?" Also, raising awareness only works when you have a united coherent message and not a seas of disjointed voices from early-career clinicians and non-professionals presenting their information that panders to an algorithm for engagement. Between this and the most recent fiasco with the APA, it's clear that our institutions will be no help to us.

🚨 NEW: For the @WSJ, @Hartz_PhD and I expose the ideological takeover of the American Psychological Association. The APA is facing the possible loss of its federal accreditation authority following allegations of widespread antisemitism. But while the APA's antisemitism problem is serious, it's only a symptom of a much deeper ideological rot. The organization has become so captured by radical left-wing political activism that its commitment to scientific objectivity competence is now in serious doubt. We examined the program for this year's major APA Division 39 conference, which drew nearly 800 attendees and held 90 panels over four days. By our count, roughly 70 of the 90 panels were overtly political, and always left-wing. Topics included abolishing the family, queer anarchist psychoanalysis, dismantling gender assessment guidelines, and white supremacy. One session even concluded with a drag show. There was at least some hope that the threat of losing federal accreditation might prompt some institutional soul-searching. It didn't. Instead, APA members just elected Candice Hargons as their next president. Her campaign identifies "systemic intersectional oppression" as the profession's "common enemy" and calls for rejecting the traditional scientific notions of objectivity. Psychologists wield enormous influence over vulnerable patients, and the people seeking treatment deserve the peace of mind knowing that the care they're receiving care is evidence based and not tainted radical politics. We believe most would agree that federal accreditation should actually mean something. If the APA cannot distinguish its scientific mission from its political activism, the Education Department should reconsider whether it deserves the government's endorsement as an authority over psychological training. From the high schools of France to the streets of Madrid to the universities of Tirana, young people are telling their governments the same thing: in an age of massive wealth inequality, they want a future they can believe in. In France, students and teachers are asking for safe schools, enough teachers and smaller classes. In Spain, for affordable rent and housing. In Albania, for good jobs and an end to corruption. @JDVance says this is what happens when a nation lets in too many immigrants from the global south. He is not just morally wrong, but misreading the moment. The is what happens when nations let wealth and power accumulate in the hands of a few. This is what happens when young people lose hope in their future. In America, let us listen to our young. We need an economic and political transformation. America's Next New Deal.

The obsessive cannot be helped unless the therapist is willing not only to tolerate but to actually sustain the risk of therapy ending prematurely. Without this risk, the therapist allows themselves to become a relic permanently on display in the obsessive's psychic museum as a dead object only to be preserved. The therapist must refuse this. They must establish themselves as an object not of the dead, but of the living and breathing. Some will flee, but if the therapist cannot tolerate losing the obsessive, the obsessive will never learn to bear the existence of a living other that comes and goes according to its own whims outside of their control. Nor will they learn to bear the other's eventual death and decay that renders their efforts of preservation totally impotent.
