The U.S. needs an output of 2 to 3 Virginia-class submarines a year. Today, it builds barely one. But with new manufacturing technologies, the defense industrial base has a generational opportunity to accelerate production.

I have been trying to work out why the Carlson—Rees-Mogg interview is going viral. I think it’s because because it represents the moment when traditional conservatism, defined by courtesy, self-restraint and truth, visibly overcomes the feverish, conspiracist and bellicose post-liberal Right.
Sir @Jacob_Rees_Mogg was the perfect instrument of destruction. He is a man of unquestioned sincerity, intellect and courtliness. He was one of only two Ali G interviewees to emerge with his reputation enhanced, the other being Tony Benn, and for the same reason: utter sincerity. With Tucker, as with the brilliant Baron-Cohen, he bats away feverish, crackpot claims in a calm, measured and devastatingly gracious way.
What ended McCarthyism was the dignified put down delivered by the Army’s lawyer, Joseph Welch, on live TV in June 1954: “Senator, you have done enough. Have you no sense of decency?” Joe McCarthy died three years later at the age of 48, broken and disgraced.
As Welch to McCarthy, so Mogg to Tucker.

I promised Pittsburgh steelworkers I would fight for US steel.
Working with @POTUS and Pennsylvania’s congressional delegation, we delivered.
Today, those steel plants are running hard, PA jobs are protected, and America is stronger because of it.

NEW in @ForeignAffairs: For this issue's cover, Kurt Campbell and I challenge the new fatalism about American alliances. We argue:
1️⃣ The alliances have weathered forgotten shocks at least this serious before, and today's are about Trump, not a permanent new politics.
2️⃣ The threats that built the alliances are intensifying and converging as China and Russia draw together.
3️⃣ Deep economic, technological, and military currents are pulling allies toward Washington faster than they can de-risk away.
The new fatalism risks becoming self-fulfilling. Convinced the alliances cannot be saved, policymakers may stop trying to save them. But the question is not whether the alliances will endure but whether they can evolve into something new — platforms for building allied scale in a world where China, backed by Russia, outscales us all.
We think they can. The United States will need to launch a presidential effort to rebuild and refashion the alliance system. It will need to credibly declare that the current damage is the product of personality not enduring policy, repudiate threats against Greenland, and start small with allies.
That means modest, defined projects with ad hoc coalitions on the issues of greatest consensus (medicine, minerals, munitions). Quick wins build momentum for more ambitious efforts. And Biden projects like AUKUS and even Trump's effort on critical minerals provide a model.
None of this is guaranteed, but neither is it implausible. The United States and its allies have agency. As attention turns to the world after Trump, the debate over the future needs more pragmatism and less despair.
Thread below.
In 2001 George W Bush proposed a partial privatization plan for Social Security so you could put 10% of your SS contribution into the markets.
People rejected this.
We can now see that if it had passed, the 10% that went into the markets would have outperformed the 90% the government managed, the program would be solvent, and the average SS recipient would be receiving 2X what they currently receive.
The worst bet you’ll ever make is betting on government.

Today, America lost a great statesman and true patriot, a man who devoted his life to serving our nation—first in uniform, then in Congress. For decades, Senator Graham has fought tirelessly to protect the American people from threats at home and abroad.
In recent weeks, he continued that vital work with uncommon vigor and dedication, even as he warned of the perils of isolationism and the need for American strength. We are thankful for his principled leadership and honored to be associated with his foreign policy legacy.
The United States is safer, stronger, and more prosperous today because of Senator Graham.
May he rest in peace.

I almost hesitate to promote this, because it wasn't really intended to be a piece. I just sort of sat down and it came out. Maybe someone else out there has the same type of day today, and it'll speak to them.

We are working with the Philippines to build a FORWARD DEPLOYED INDUSTRIAL BASE in Luzon — a peaceful platform designed to secure vital supply-chain inputs for American and aligned companies, built with a strong sovereign partner, iterated on as we learn.
Statecraft, at its best, is a product. American products don’t just compete. They enchant and delight. That is the edge this country has. And it’s the foundation of the State Department’s economic statecraft strategy.
Four thousand acres. Roughly one-third the size of Manhattan — the equivalent of everything from Times Square south to the very tip of the island. A hub for industrial cooperation, shared growth and economic security. It is the first of its kind. We are doing new things because we are in new times! 🇺🇸 🇵🇭

🇺🇸 Significant: INDOPACOM Commander Admiral Paparo says that he has no unfunded requirements given the budget submission this year.
The Pentagon Comptroller previously said that he expected the Unfunded Priority Lists would be much "skinnier" this year, due to the significant increase in spending they are requesting. INDOPACOM will evidently not be submitting one at all.
