This is a tale of two generals—Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and Brad Cooper, the commander of US Central Command. @KoriSchake analyzes how each of these generals have responded to political pressure, and either maintained or disregarded civil-military norms. aei.org/foreign-and-defense-…

When police arrested masked men outside a British air base in Fairford, national security experts feared an imitation of Ukraine’s Operation Spiderweb unfolding in the UK. @bradyafr explains why this is a wake-up call to everyone about increasing drone threats. aei.org/foreign-and-defense-…

There’s not a good terrestrial replacement for space, for the kind of things they’re doing, because you need to be able to communicate over such long distances. Their next best hope would actually be Amazon Leo, says AEI’s @ToddHarrisonDC to @politico politico.com/newsletters/nat…

AEI's Angela Stent comments on President Trump suspending Russian fuel sanctions, “Trump’s diesel deal will do little to deliver significant or lasting price relief to the US. The main reason for the rise in gasoline prices is the war in Iran, not the Russia-Ukraine war.” Interested in hearing more from Dr. Stent? The straw poll on October 16 completely resets the race for the next United Nations Secretary General. All current candidates are opposed by at least two permanent members of the Security Council. Expect withdrawals and new candidates. Which gives the US opportunities. aei.org/foreign-and-defense-…

President Trump is right to want peace between Ukraine and Russia. But his actions are making that harder to achieve by emboldening Putin's aggression. Read the latest column from AEI's @HalBrands aei.org/commentary/trump-jus…

A full-scale Ethiopian invasion of Eritrea seems unlikely in the short term (days and weeks), but likely in the medium to long term (months to years). There are obviously a lot of variables here, but when people tell you what they want to do, believe them. Ethiopian officials are laying the groundwork to legally justify military action against Eritrea on self-defense grounds, and Ethiopian government-affiliated or -aligned institutions are saying everything up to regime change is justifiable. If Isaias is unwilling to comply with Ethiopian demands related to Eritrean support for Ethiopian rebels and Assab, which seems unlikely, then we're talking about a matter of when, not if. Abiy presumably doesn't want to get bogged down in Eritrea if the TPLF and Fano can pose a serious threat to ENDF supply lines and major urban centers, so he's likely to wait a bit until the ENDF can consolidate some control over these areas. But all that rests on several assumptions and variables related to how Ethiopian planners gauge the threat TPLF/Fano pose and how quickly the ENDF could blitzkrieg Asmara, the latter of which is dependent on how they assess Ethiopian air/drone superiority and potential external assistance to Eritrea [Egypt in particular]. My forecast on Ethiopia and Eritrea, with analysis of several courses of action (border war, Assab seizure, full-scale invasion/regime change) over the short, medium, and long term.⬇️
NEW | Ethiopian federal forces have advanced toward the Ethiopia-Eritrea border, which will likely result in a low-intensity border war in the short term. However, Ethiopia has set conditions to legally justify a regime-change war and would likely use a border war to set military conditions for a possible large-scale invasion in the medium to long term, including weathering several capacity constraints that currently disincentivize a full-scale invasion. More assessments on what lies ahead in northern Ethiopia and Eritrea🧵

A lot of ink has been spilled about the US abandoning the United Nations. Yet, despite deep cuts, America contributed $7.1 billion in 2025 to the UN system, about half the $14.4 billion in 2024. Nonetheless, the US contributed far more than any other nation. aei.org/foreign-and-defense-…

There are 3 reasons why this year’s continuing resolution is different and even more disruptive than the past. 1. The Pentagon’s financial situation and pending emergency supplemental request 2. Temporary funding levels are significantly below current spending 3. A post-midterm election lame duck session of Congress Check out the full analysis: aei.org/commentary/even-by-r…
