Money moves at the speed of trust. When one commits many more follow. Keep going
I got an insanely early morning text from one of my portfolio founders that they finally got a lead for their pre-seed round, and now they're oversubscribing and doing a second tranche. I'm of the mindset, and maybe it's an abundance mindset, that there is always capital out there for you. It's just finding the right partner, and finding the right partners is the hard thing to do. There's huge shoe leather cost to fundraising, especially if you're in a non-consensus category, but if you don't quit, you can make it happen, and big things can happen from there.

I'm convinced successful people are just willing to look stupid for years longer than anyone else to get what they want.

At the sidelines of #UNGA81, Minister @MusoniPaula joined the World Economic Forum’s Centre for AI Excellence to discuss AI sovereignty, infrastructure and Africa’s digital transformation. She highlighted Rwanda’s experience and the need to move beyond individual AI pilots towards scalable solutions, with African countries collaborating on data, compute, energy, skills and interoperable frameworks while retaining agency over AI deployment. She emphasized skills as a core pillar of AI sovereignty, enabling Africa to develop and deploy AI solutions that respond to local priorities and ensure its benefits reach citizens.

More checks earlier is what we need and VCs do the exact opposite now xitter.cf/alphanomeai/status/209…
While SAFEs address early-stage valuation uncertainty, they still require full capital deployment upfront. By adapting derivatives from capital markets, Paid Call Options & Abandonment Swaps, the ecosystem can establish a flexible third asset class. alphanome.ai/post/beyond-equ…

another "down round acquisition" where the late stage guys got 1x and the early guys got 100x. Invest early my friends.
Bending Spoons acquires Miro for ~$1.79b. But who gets the 💰? My usual breakdown below 👇 *This is 89.8% below the last round, and <3x EV/ARR* 📉 Yet, investors are making $370m of profits on a company that was once valued at $17.5b! Not a glorious outcome but a 1.78x blended multiple on $473m invested. 👀 There are mainly three parties doing well here: (1) founders & team, (2) @altairvc, and (3) @Accel. Most of the capital came in at the top, and the preference sheltered investors nicely from a 90% haircut... Not a great return after 5 years of equity cost of capital, but "better 1.0x than 0.1x". So let's dive in: *1) Founders, Team and Common shareholders will be sharing nearly $1b* 🥳 While I am sure they expected much better in 2021 at the height of the bubble, this is an acceptable outcome. Miro can thank its frugality for this outcome: (1) the acquisition press release implies it still has $435m on balance sheet at closing, and (2) the company only ever raised $473m! The cash added back to the $1.355b enterprise value effectively paid by Bending Spoons really helps (<3x ARR), and only the Series C claims pref. *2) Accel is getting the most $ back, but not without regrets* 🫠 They are making c.9x from the Series A. But they will have mixed feelings today, and will regret following on in the Series B and C which will return ~1.9x and 1.0x respectively. Both of which are obviously not great for six and five years of equity risk, respectively. *3) AltaIR likely still returns >100x ‼️*: investing at pre-seed can pay off, even when growth investors do not make money. *4) Disappointing outcome for growth investors. But the pref worked as intended.* 😮‍💨 The acquisition is a 90% haircut to the Series C price of $17.5b. However, the Series C investors will still make 1.0x back thanks to liq pref. ICONIQ, Salesforce, Atlassian, Dragoneer, TCV, DST and @codorniou can all thank this mechanism, without which there would have been a few very awkward LP calls!

We ran out of money. There. I said it. Building in Africa comes with a lot of pressure to make everything look like it's going according to plan. It isn't. We've had to slow down, rethink, cut things back and become much more disciplined with our resources.

It was a fun chat with @ThibautMntwari - and many thanks to the Voices Podcast for recording this version of ‘Founders Talk’ at @RwandaBuild Program. Often at RWBuild we have unscripted chats like this. This day we opened up in the fun of making crazy predictions (and record it 😳😱). For those of us who get the privilege to build the future, we need to innovate - and predicting the future is just part of that! Products we talked about: - Grammarly (started using it around 2010 - writing improved) - Conversion.ai (rebranded into Jasper) - 2021/2 used it for marketing projects and events at RWBuild (it was not very useful or good) - copy.ai - also not very useful - chatGPT - used it from first day of launch. it was ok for writing and research, but only became impactful in 2024. Powers our investing research and email/ letter writing. - Perplextiy - currently, best tool for lookup facts and research. - Claud - by far has been and is the best for aiding software development and productivity. None of these tools really write for us at RWBuild, but they do clean our copy writing and fortmat writing well. For me, I can loose as much time as what I save, as AI often writes or correct something to be ‘wrong’. The future is moving fast and every year these products x2. It’s clear that these tools for most will completely do the work in documents, sheets, and design. It’s already replacing coding tasks. Our own products we talked about: Guhemba Ltd. - Guhemba.rw Murugo.Cloud AI EventsBash.RW
In this episode, tech entrepreneur Mr. Rob delivers bold predictions about the future of technology and business. He argues that AI could significantly disrupt the legal profession..@Rickard @guhemba @RwandaBuild #Rwanda #TechNews youtu.be/bRPm1nQim68?si=Aig4…

Nick is one of the smartest founders I have seen. He doesn't like having layers of management. He believes in a small group of autonomous high-performing teams that own it. Same philosophy as @Rickard.
At this stage, I think it is undeniable that Revolut will be a $500BN company. (I do not say that lightly). They are a compound startup. They try 20 new products at a time. They create small 8-10-person teams for each product. They "invest" $2M into each team. They give them 24 months to execute. They monitor them on a weekly basis according to a set of agreed KPIs. What works, they double down on. A machine. 👇

Founder closed a $15m Series A (top tier VC) and 6 months later, plans to return the cash to investors. Feels like long term, Claude will displace the product / erode the value. This is really happening, most people are not talking about it, it’s kinda wild.

Rwanda just did something most ecosystems are still debating - It built a Kinyarwanda ICT dictionary with 1,700+ tech terms! 🙌🏻 This is great! We are all about Rwandans building tech solutions for Rwanda at @RwandaBuild - If people can’t understand technology in their own language, they can’t fully participate in building it.
Rwanda Develops First Kinyarwanda ICT Dictionary Rwanda has reached a milestone in digital inclusion with its first Kinyarwanda ICT dictionary, compiling over 1,700 tech terms. Developed by the Rwanda Cultural Heritage Academy with partners, it standardises digital vocabulary to make technology more accessible. By translating complex concepts into Kinyarwanda, it challenges the idea that African languages cannot keep pace with innovation. The dictionary reflects a wider push to preserve linguistic identity in the digital age. Supported by the Rwanda Education Board, it will strengthen education, support AI development, and reduce reliance on foreign languages. As Africa’s tech ecosystem grows, such efforts highlight the need for inclusive, locally rooted digital systems.
