How about this for toe-to-toe.
Battle of Boston Harbour
38-gun HMS Shannon versus 38-gun USS Chesapeake.
British victory.
Mind you, I fully respect the US naval achievement in the War of 1812, they were the underdog and made a good showing for the opening phase of the war
Every time I see something like this about the British Navy i think about the fact that the US Navy went toe-to-toe with them in the War of 1812 with like six frigates and a bunch of privateers and it got so bad that the British admiralty forbade ships from engaging American frigates unless they had a two to one advantage.

Nelson’s prayer before Trafalgar. The last record, but one, that he made in his diary.
“May the great God, whom I worship, grant to my country, and for the benefit of Europe in general, a great and glorious victory; and may no misconduct in anyone tarnish it; and may humanity after victory be the predominant feature in the British fleet. For myself individually, I commit my life to Him that made me, and may His blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country faithfully. To Him I resign myself, and the just cause which is entrusted to me to defend. Amen, Amen, Amen.”

On this day in 1827 a combined British, Russian and French fleet under the command of British admiral Edward Codrington defeated the Ottoman Turks at the Battle of Navarino in the Ionian Sea, bringing the independence of Greece from Turkish rule one step closer.

'Though they are members of a civilized society, they may in some measure be looked upon as a body of uncivilized men, rough, passionate, revengeful, but likewise brave, sincere, and true to each other.'
